Movie Studio 18

roger-baker wrote on 11/30/2021, 6:27 AM

I have been a loyal user of vegas movie studio for many years and have done several upgrades over this time.

The latest upgrade to 18 is completely different software and is not really an upgrade. All the experience I have gained is useless.

Please refund the cost of this and I will remove this useless program from my PC. Can you offer me an alternative for me to upgrade to vegas pro? At least there is a programme I will be familiar with

Hi,

This is a user forum, not Magix support.

and I will remove this useless program from my PC

It is not a useless program and has far, far more to offer than Vegas Movie Studio ever did, starting with multiple timelines (just a wet dream for Vegas users), Travel Maps, Soundtrack Maker, music with the Slideshow Maker, external audio editor, external Photo Designer, many different types of title templates, including 3D titles and captions, animated titles, collages, design elements, PiP, Movie Templates, and much more. You should take a good look at what you got before deciding to dump it.

If you check on the Vegas forum, you'll find that Vegas had offered a big discount for Vegas MS users to upgrade to Vegas Pro.

Hi

To add to @browj2 comment see the tutorials on getting started - the list is here, the only downside at the moment with the change is that the program will only import the basic edits only for project created in Vegas Movie Studio 17 or earlier.

I'm gonna have to go with @roger-baker on this one. Vegas still offers an upgrade path (at least they do on my account) to the actual Vegas software. Runs about 100 ish for Vegas Edit. Not the same program as VMS, but much closer a fit. I received the upgrade offer (to Movie Studio 2022, yes they're still doing the same thing...) in my Black Friday emails, last week. I didn't realize the play until I'd bought it and installed it. Then uninstalled it. I'll take that up with Magix though. As they've mentioned, these are just good, helpful peeps helping users. Thank you for that! I do the same on forums for programs I use too.

Thank you @Christopher-Swartz

I tried to get my money back but Magix will only refund for 3 months and I am just over that. I may as well give 18 a try and see if I can pick it up

@roger-baker

Hi Roger,

We are here to help. The link that John EB gave you has a listing of my tutorials about getting started and especially basic editing, amongst others, that will save you hours of playing around without understanding what you are really doing.

What types of videos do you do and what are you looking for in the way of effects, audio, templates, etc. and editing particulars?

I mentioned a few of the features above. Let us know if you want more info on any of them.

One starting note, the track sequence in Magix MS/Movie Edit Pro is not like Vegas. In Vegas, the lowest track is the one at the bottom of the timeline. In MMS, the lowest track is always, wait for it, Track 1. Track 2 is higher, then 3, then 4. No more inserting tracks above thus moving the background to another track lower on the screen. You always know where your background is. Also, a track is a track; there are no special tracks (except in Mulitcam editing). Use a track for what you want, but it's always a good idea to avoid mixing audio and video objects on the same track. That reminds me, we use the term "objects" not "events."

Hi Roger.

If you want to record to 5.1 surround sound or higher your only export option will be to use WMV as all support for Dolby encoding has gone from all video editing packages across the board and is no longer supported by Dolby Labs who are no longer granting licences to such applications. Possibly from pressure from the film industry, I'm not sure anyone knows why but that would be my guess. You can import such material but not export it again except as a stereo mix-down.

Although written as an article about Adobe software and Dolby Labs I think this web page is a pretty good explanation of the "loss" of Dolby Licensing.

@emmrecs

Thanks for that link Jeff.

So it remains to be seen whether it will ever be re-introduced or not. Whether Dolby can remain profitable on just it's pro division side or not. Considering how penny pinching all these developers are, my guess would be not.

I wonder if this is also the cause of the demise of the Vegas DVD authoring software?

On the plus side the wmv pro codec sound wise for 5.1 or higher is now very good but as far as I know means you are stuck using a PC or Mac to play it back.

You've come to the right place!

So long as you downloaded and installed the additional content, then it's time for you to start exploring what you have. There are PnP templates that may help, plus you can make your own and save them. The same applies to titles, transitions, effects and collages. Try out everything; there is a lot.

Watch my two tutorials on Fades and Transitions to get a good overview as to what is available and some of the tricks in using them.

For audio, watch my two tutorials on Everything Video to get a good understanding as to what you have available. Here is the first one:

You have tools to detect transients and cut to the beat amongst many other things.

For holidays and travel, I use Travel Maps (under Edit, Wizards, or use the standalone). I add PnP on the timeline instead of including photos in the TM project, and I cut up the TM video on the timeline and use the snippets where relevant. I also adjust the speed as necessary. This program alone is worth the price of admission. Here is a simple example.

@CubeAce You are presumably referring to DVDA and my understanding is that it probably helped in the decision but it was mainly dropped because of the resources required and with disc burning a rapidly shrinking market it was probably uneconomical trying to maintain it. Vegas aren't alone. Adobe dropped Encore a while back.

@Nalmcruto You are referring to the Vegas editing products. With DVDA Magix dropped the Studio version soon after acquiring the Vegas products. This left only the Pro version of DVDA available. Now as it has been discontinued it's no longer available from Magix.
