MOV files play incorrectly; negative video image

William-Harden wrote on 11/26/2021, 11:14 PM

When using Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021 I had paid for and activated HEVC H.265 and Mov files played correctly. I Upgraded from Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021 to 2022 on my PC and after the upgrade Mov files wouldn't play correctly and looks like a negative image when played. I'm allowed to install MEP Premium 2022 on two computers, so I installed MEP Premium 2022 on a second computer (it is a laptop), paid for and activated HEVC H.2655 and the Mov files play correctly on the laptop. So, I have a PC with MOP Premium 2022 that will not play Mov files correctly and I don' know how to fix it; I think the HEVC H.265 codec is corrupt on my PC. So, how do I fix MEP Premium 2022 on my PC to play Mov files???

One other thing, I currently have MEP Premium 2022 software version 21.0.1.104 installed on both the PC and Laptop. I was hoping that by updating the software it would correct the problem, but it didn't.

Hi,

It sounds like you have inadvertently turned on Anaglyph display or something. Open the hamburger menu at the upper left of the Preview Monitor and click on 2D in the bottom half of the list if something else is checked.

Thanks for the reply browj2. Standard (2D) is properly checked on the dropdown menu. I have only seen Mov files from my iPhone affected by this anomaly. Samsung Galaxy S21, Canon and Sony camera video files do not have by this anomaly.

Hi

I assume 'negative image' means the colours are reversed is this correct or do you mean the image is very washed out to be almost black/white?

A screen shot of the Preview monitor showing the 'negative image' would help so we can see what you are seeing.

Would this be an iPhone 12 and did you record in HDR?

iPhone XS video set to HD 720P at 30 frames per second and smart HDR is on. The first photo is video on the PC and the second photo is video on the laptop the way the video should look.

I tried an iPhone video file with smart HDR turned off and it made no difference in MEP, it was still bad.

Hi

We need more information:

  1. Computer specification and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full - I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

  2. Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

Hi

From the video clip, which appears to be showing the preview image building up to what it should look like, and assuming this is 4K video from the iPhone XS, it looks like the AMD RX490 is struggling to render the preview when using HDR video.

Does the true image appear within a few seconds?

There may be another issue as well with the source video.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse the iPhone video clip shown in your video above and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip.

Thanks for the reply John. The Mov file is 1280 X 720 at 30 fps and I'll include the file for you to view. I haven't yet had time to analyze the file as you have requested due to Thanksgiving holiday activities. Hopefully, you can gain some information from the Mov file that I provide.

Hi William.

Unfortunately a file has to be downloadable from a file sharing site like Dropbox or Google drive as posting to a hosting site already alters the file making any file data we can extract wrong.

We need a direct download link from such a file sharing cloud option.

Hi

Thanks for the MediaInfo data - the video is as I suspected - Variable framerate - MEP works best with video at a Constant framerate.

Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 29.970 (30000/1001) FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 28.571 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 30.000 FPS

The range from minimum to maximum is not particularly large that I would expect to cause what you are seeing, however combining this with the Radeon RX480 being towards the bottom end of the system requirements for MEP 2022, it may be enough to show the preview rendering issue seen.

Try using a video converter eg Handbrake to convert the video to Constant framerate and see if this fixes the issue.

If you use Handbrake select the Fast 720p30 preset and change to the setting shown below on the Video tab - this will also put the video into a mp4 file format.

@William-Harden

Hi

I see from your last video clip, the file extension of the clip on the timeline is an M4V file not MP4 as should have been outputted from Handbrake with the settings I gave you - is there a reason for this?

Hi William.

I think the Constant frame rate box should be ticked, not the peak frame rate.

Ray.

Included here is the Handbrake mp4 video being played in MEP and as you can see it still isn't playing correctly.

John, is there anything else you would like me to do?

John, yes there is: M4V is the default container for Handbrake (at least it is here). Not that it has any bearing on anything. An M4V is an MP4 for all intents and purposes. There may be a setting in Handbrake to change the default extension; I haven't looked.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
