.mov file is disappearing over time

Joshua-Burner wrote on 3/26/2025, 7:20 PM

I imported a .mov with transparency into my project to create a transition for my videos. Problem is, as time goes on, the .mov file doesn't show up anymore. Even rendering it out it's like it doesn't exist.

I've tried workarounds, but Video Pro X doesn't allow exporting into .mov or even into a PNG Sequence.

@Joshua-Burner Does it just slowly fade away or does it stop working properly with repeated plays & does the .mov play correctly when played in a media player? It's not easy to work out what you're saying.

Can upload a video capture of the full screen or pictures of VPX?, use the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment.

-----------

PS. does yours not have .Export Move - Sequence of frames'? (VPX png's don't export with transparency)

It stops working properly with repeated Plays.

It does not correctly play in a media player. I get an error of: "cannot open file.mov it's encoded in an ap4h format which isn't supported."

It works again when I close and reopen the project.

Mine does, but I'm trying to export SOMETHING with transparency so I can just work around it.

Hi

. . . . .  imported a .mov with transparency into my project . . . .

Is the MOV video file video encoded in the PNG format, or has a seperate Alpha channel and is Quicktime for Windows installed?

. . . . It stops working properly with repeated Plays. . . .

Are you adjusting the Brightness or Transparency of the video clip between plays? If so this is the likely cause of the issue.

. . . . to create a transition for my videos . . . .

An alternative to using movie files with transparency/alpha channel, is to use the the Mask Genrator to create the transition from any supported video file format.

See this tutorial on how to do this, while the tutorial was made using Movie Edit Pro, now called Magix Movie Studio, it also applies to Video Pro X, and it does not need a video file with transparency.

Quicktime is installed. I don't know how the .mov itself was encoded ; I purchased it online.

Are you adjusting the Brightness or Transparency of the video clip between plays? If so this is the likely cause of the issue.

No. Oftentimes when I just hit play, the .mov doesn't work. It's not just this file; oftentimes when I work with .mov's with transparency, MAGIX occasionally makes that .mov vanish from the preview and render.

That's not what I'm trying to do. Here's what the video is SUPPOSED to look like. I managed to get a decent render of it before it borked again. The black parts are what's intended to be transparent.

@Joshua-Burner

Hi

Thanks for the example video, I assume you have not uploaded the original .MOV file as @Gid has asked for, due to it being a purchased video file and the licensing stops you sharing the file with us.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse the video with transparency clip and post the results, see this tutorial on how to set up MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required, please post all the data.

Using the clip you uploaded to Google Drive, is all the black, including the black borders of the text, supposed to be transparent ie like this, I have used a blue image behind the video clip

Or should the text border be black?

Are you using Proxy files - this setting is in the Project settings ( E key ), if so try turning the option off and test again.

Does the issue come back after using the Edit, Empty the Undo and cache history option?

A screenshot of the timeline, zoomed in to show the track/object layout around the clip, being used as a transition would help.

@Joshua-Burner I loop played your file - Cartoon Fire Transitions 07.mov on VPX14 & MMS 2035 without any issues,.

Can you show your timeline so we can work out how you're applying it? &/or suggest a way of replicating your problem?

PS. for me Windows & VLC player don't like ,mov 444 but MPC will play your file, it's hard to see if it's got transparency as the background shows as black.

There's a few options in this link but the one I use is the second in the list MPC-BE.1.8.2.x64-installer.zip

Are you using Proxy files - this setting is in the Project settings ( E key ), if so try turning the option off and test again.

I don't use that option, no.

Does the issue come back after using the Edit, Empty the Undo and cache history option?

Yeah. Sometimes it briefly fixes it, but it comes right back and it doesn't work a second time.

A screenshot of the timeline, zoomed in to show the track/object layout around the clip, being used as a transition would help.

@CubeAce Hi.

I was talking about playing the file in a media player & seeing the alpha background, that's hard to do as the player has a black background.

Example MPC player -

------------

 I loop played your file - Cartoon Fire Transitions 07.mov on VPX14 & MMS 2035 without any issues,.

In other words there was no problem playing or with transparency, but as with a media player the MMS timeline objects don't show transparency,

Thankfully VP does & was the first place loaded the file after downloading it to assess it's transparency.

@Gid

Hi Gid.

Gotcha! I wasn't aware I could do and see that in Vegas. Cool.

I agree, don't use Chroma key.

Also, using the same clip overlapping like that could cause memory address problems. I suggest copying the mov. file but giving it different names and using a different file for each instance of use. Then the same file is not being accessed at different time points at the same instance.

Ray.

@Joshua-Burner I was just trying to work out what you've done, If this file has already got transparency & then you've added Chroma Key that might mess with that files alpha channel.

I don't see Chroma key on the main nest, Chroma Key that is applied in the nested sequence might not transfer through to the main nest? ie it might not come through as an object with transparency, I've no experience with VPX in these matters nor it's ability or inability of creating transparent objects. (In theory a main nest is an object on it's own & can be dealt with as such)

Hi

. . . . If this file has already got transparency & then you've added Chroma Key that might mess with that files alpha channel. . . .

Gid is correct, adding Alpha to a video or image which already has an Alpha channel does mess up the effect as shown below

Looks very similar to what I see in your images.

@CubeAce, Gid

In a MediaInfo analysis, if a video clip has an Alpha channel you will see at least one of these parameters

Format profile                           : 4444

Possibly with

Color space                              : YUVA

Or

Color space                              : RGBA

In all the above the 4th digit/character indicates and embedded Alpha channel

(In theory a main nest is an object on it's own & can be dealt with as such)

The OP's comment -

The text border should be black. The black areas at the beginning and end are the parts that should be transparent.

Adding another Chroma Key to that object has removed the black border making it transparent.. bit confusing tho with the 'The black areas at the beginning and end are the parts that should be transparent.' as we cant see that bit, the image above is just a picture, there is no video showing beginnings or ends?

@johnebaker Giving the OP the benefit of the doubt, in the image above the duplicated objects on the upper right only have Chroma key on one of them, so presuming that the nest sequence works as expected & that key is doing it's job correctly whatever that is & has transparency in the correct places🤷‍♂️. When returning to the main timeline does the main nest object also need Chroma Key applying to it.

@Joshua-Burner Hi, you can add Chroma key to a .mov file but it makes it into a mask, in theory this shouldn't be a problem but you have to allow for the consequences if there is already transparency, coloured parts will become shades of grey masking to various degrees according the their greyness, but the alpha of the .mov may become either useless or at the very least unpredictable.

I use Vegas Pro where I can add Chroma key to a .mov (or use other options to make it a mask) without problems,

So I'm going to have to leave this up to the others to explain why MMS/VPX does this.

@johnebaker @CubeAce

It stops working properly with repeated Plays.

Yeah. Sometimes it briefly fixes it, but it comes right back and it doesn't work a second time

I played with the .mov adding Chroma Key to make it a mask but very quickly the 'mask' disappeared. I think this messes with MMS's head..?

2min vid but it happens fairly quickly & at the end.

@Gid,

Hi Gid

. . . . I use Vegas Pro where I can add Chroma key to a .mov (or use other options to make it a mask) without problems, . . . .

With respect to the issue joshua has, what Vegas can do is not relevant:-

  • The software Joshua has to work with is VPX.

  • The issue is with adding the Chromakey Alpha, on top of a video clip that already has an Alpha channel and whether we can replicate the issue and determine if it is a bug.

On import the Alpha channel is applied automatically in VPX (and MMS) without the need for adding it again, which, as you correctly stated previously, converts it into a mask.

From your testing shown in the above MMS clip something is going wrong, so far the testing I have done, using mov with Alpha video clips, encoded as PNG YUVA , and Prores 4444 YUVA, and setting the parameters for the Chromakey Alpha once to the desired effect, does not replicate the issue.

I will try and repeat what you have done to see if I can trigger the issue.

@johnebaker Hi, with respect, showing that any keying fx can be applied to a .mov with transparency in VP without problems is very relevant, it shows that this isn't a common or expected problem & that it is solely a VPX/MMS problem.
