MMS 2025: New AI Effects

AAProds wrote on 9/24/2024, 8:44 PM

I thought I'd open a new topic discussing the new AI effects in Movie Studio and VPX (although I don't have VPX 16).

@johnebaker put up a couple of nice examples of Dehaze working on another topic and I'm curious how it would work on this clip. I didn't have much success.

On the same clip, AI Sharpen worked really well.

Clip:

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al

AI Dehaze fails miserably on the above clip, as in the first example I posted in the other topic.

This one is relatively easy to correct using colour correction, as the clip is overall too blue add in more of the opposite colour ie yellow, here is a quick and dirty correction, a little more work could get it better.

@johnebaker

John, I was impressed by both your clips; perhaps it is the resolution that makes the dehaze work so well on yours but not on mine, or maybe the native sharpness (or lack thereof in mine). I suppose though, for the price, at least on yours, it is well worth it.

Yes, I've done some other work on that wedding clip. As I mentioned, the AI sharpener worked well.

Greetings Al, just picked this up and I thought I'd have a look too. It sound like you;ve sorted it but now that I've played (not knowing what effects you have) here's my effort for what it's worth:

Thanks Andy, I'll study your filters closely. That's a nifty way of showing their individual effects!

Hi Al,

This is a good example of what we're faced with, with 8mm and S8 film.

I took a stab at it using VPX16 so that you can see the problems on the scopes and what happens when applying various effects. You really should upgrade to VPX.

I presume that you had already applied Neat Video to this video.

The two main problems that you'll see clearly in the scopes are the exposure and the bluish hue.

Here is the output:

Here is how I did it. Maybe too many effects. One can play with this all day.

@AAProds

Hi Al

Another good reason to go for VPX.......

Here is my second attempt using some crazy curves with a dash of minor color correction, the initial adjustment had a very slight yellow cast:

Here are the curves - only available in VPX

Using a 'Colour correction by Numbers' method, ie by measuring RGB values for Low, Mid and Highlights of what should be neutral colours, ie black (deep shadow), mid grey (bright parts of suit) and white (dress and cars), and using, in this case the red channel values, as the target values for the measured values of G and B channels.

Full method is to be found in Professional Photoshop 5: The Classic Guide to Color Correction by Dan Margulis - one of go to's for colour correction of images (also applies to video)
