Mixdown Speed Much Better with Magix Screen Maximised

I recall a post of some time ago about mixdown speeds for a DV project that were around 30% faster when the Magix screen was minimised. I tried it a couple of times on my old system and did find that minimising the screen did seem to speed the mixdown up a bit.

I am experimenting with my new system so thought I'd revisit this. Using Ray's test project, I found that leaving the Magix screen maximised drastically reduced the mixdown time:

Screen maximised: 10:38 and 10:38

Screen minimised: 16:41 and 14:26.

Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Which window should you maximize?
The program window or the window from the preview monitor?
Or the window that appears during export?

Is this another thing that happens in VDL 2023 / VPX14 and does not occur in VDL 2022 / VPX 13?

If I remember correctly on a two monitor setup with one monitor set to an inboard GPU (Intel) that also performed faster than using the third party dedicated graphics card.

Marc, I'm minimising the Magix screens by clicking the Minimise button on the Mixing Down screen.

I don't have VDL2022, VPX 13 or VPX 14.

Thanks Ray, I'm not concerned about the actual speed but the difference with screen maximised verses minimised.

Sorry I typed that incorrectly.

What I should have said was the programs rendered faster when the programs were placed on the Intel powered monitor over placing the program on the nvidia powered monitor.

Greetings Al,

Hmm, I find that MS2023 encodes (mixes down) quicker by several %points with the program minimised. I also found that with MEP2022 as discussed here https://www.magix.info/us/forum/mep-2022-encoding-times-tested--1285686/#ca1717509..

Oddly, when I use Virtualdub and Avidemux it's the other way round i.e. with the program maximised it's quicker.

Using Handbrake (actually Vidcoder which uses the Handbrake engine) it makes no noticeable difference whether max or min.

This is on a single monitor system if that makes a difference.

I tested that.
The program actually renders faster when minimized.

If I include fewer effects (PIP, Chroma Key), the greater the difference in render time between the minimized window and the time with the normal window view.

With my laptop system the differences are between 14% and 17%.

Hi Al,

Not that it makes much difference during export, but do you really mean Mixdown as in Edit/Combine video and audio (Shift+M), aka Mixdown, which exports to mxv and replaces everything on the timeline with the mxv file, or do you actually mean File/Export movie?

Some time ago I tested how big the difference is when I export to my internal M2 SSD hard drive or to a USB C 3.2 Gen1 SSD hard drive (Samsung T5).

My previous test of a 9-minute project resulted in a difference of less than 4 seconds.

Now I know I don't need to think too much about storage media.
I just have to minimize the Magix window.

This reduces the export time of the same project to the Samsung T5 by 36 seconds.

Without minimized window 4:12 min.
Window minimized 3:36 min.

Tried again, with Win 11 this time:

Maximised: 8:41

Minimised: 10:52

Perhaps it will change when I put in my GPU, but running on the iGPU only, it is definitely much faster to leave the Magix screen maximised.

Some more results, even more pronounced. I'm mixing down/exporting some big DV-AVIs into MPEG4, with Neat Video and a bit of sectioning and sharpening, resizing to 1440x1080. The RTX-3060 GPU is doing most of the work. The export was to the same drive as the source files.

With Magix minimised, encoding speed is 61%, 62%, 59% of real speed over three separate tests on the same file.

With Magix maximised, encoding speed was 175% and 175%.

I did one test with Magix maximised and then the monitor powered off; and it came in at 175% as well.
