@Don-Golden I think Magix does this, because they want all users to use the newest version. You can download the free version of Music Maker 2022 and enter your 2018 serial number. All your content from version 2018 should then be unlocked in version 2022.

That could be correct if you updated Music Maker to a later version eg 2022 - check the version number in the program, if it is 21.x.x.xxx then you have Music Maker 2022 and it is running with the 2018 registration - click the link in the right pane of the Welcome screen to check what activations are used

Note the program is free what you purchase is an edition which adds more features, functionality, soundpools and instruments.

See this tutorial to understand how it works. Music Maker is free, addons, like an Edition, are not.
