MEP 2016 - Couple of basic queries

terrypin wrote on 8/11/2016, 5:08 AM

Finally working on first proper project using MEP 2016 Premium (on Win 10 PC).

1. In MEP 2014 when I cut the previous part of an object,  the gap closed, moving the remaining timeline objects leftwards. That was even with Mouse Mode set to Single Object. In MEP 2016 that doesn't happen. Is that intentional, correcting an earlier design flaw?

2. Autosave appears to be working even on unchanged projects. Six created in the last hour, despite working elsewhere during that time (perhaps with occasional returns to MEP to simply look at it). That unnecessary saving did not occur in MEP 2014.

yes it is - they close it only in mouse mode for one or all tracks(?)

Autosave appears to be working even on unchanged projects

yes, the same in german - the idea: new projekts unsaved and you have a crash - there is a bak with the actual date.

But it may be a problem when you call up a projekt, do nothing than an older bak will be deleted.

HiTerry,

New "features:"

1. Ctrl+delete closes up the gap if in basic mouse mode. I must finish and publish my tutorial on these.

2. Increase the time between saves. I should take my own advice.

Morning Walter and John,

Thanks both.

10 mins is a long time for me when I'm editing fast! I've always been always thankful to have a recent backup. But I've emailed Support about this. If it is deliberate, as Walter implies, then it seems poorly implemented to me. It should be easy enough to trigger the auto save only if there has been an edit since the previous one.

One helpful step may be when you press "Y" and go to "system"

There you can change the saving time

and

you can delete saving

a worflow than may be:

default: no saving

when you start to work than you use the saving.

As far as I remember, MEP was ever saving (default) all ten minutes - if something is done or not.

It is ( or was )  only only a funktion of time. Starting from your last own saving! Or if you don't save anything.

This has been a problem for users saving all 5min their projekt themselves:

they never got a bak file!

I agree about the Autosave with MEP 2016.  It keeps adding BAK files.  Sometimes I'll begin a project, maybe I'll import the videos, and then leave it for awhile without naming it.  When I return, I find at least one "Autosave.MV_" file.

There's another difference in this version.  The first Autosave is BAK0, the next is BAK1.  This goes to BAK9, and the next Autosave is BAK0.

johnebaker wrote on 8/14/2016, 5:01 AM

Hi

AFAICS the new backup method, ie creating a rotating sequence of 10 BAK files, comes from VPX - I have the same sequence of BAK files in a project that was created in 2013 using VPX 4.

It certainly beats the old method in that you can roll back to a previous point in the event of a crash.

I don't understand JohnEB - MEP has always saved a rotating sequence of 10 BAK files, one every 10mins on the default setting?

Hi Peter

. . . . MEP has always saved a rotating sequence of 10 BAK files, one every 10mins on the default setting . . . .

I checked some of my old projects going back to 2009 that are not on my backup drives and have not been opened in MEP 2016, and there is only one BAK file, sequentially numbered,  for each date the project was opened, not a new one created every 10 mins by the autosave.

Hi John, Peter,

My recollection is similar to John's. In MEP 2014 and earlier I'm pretty sure I was getting backups only when working in MEP, at the 10 min interval I'd set.

EDIT: I've fired up MEP 2014 on my old PC and can confirm the above.  No backups are autosaved unless I edit the project. That's what I regard as correct, intelligent behaviour. MEP 2016 makes them constantly, which is daft.

Hi John

That is so strange! I have just had a look in MEP2015 and can see 6 BAK files created within one hour on the same date, which is no different to what I have been used to in many previous versions. These are not exactly on the 10mins but I don't think these are manual saves..... or could they be? I do not think so because whilst some seem a bit variable (several mins) most are almost exactly on the 10mins. Actually I think some are auto and some are manual and I think Walter is confirming this in his reply below.

Terry

Not on my main PC so cannot confirm that 2016 is doing something different to previous versions.

Tell you what though, VPX8 has caught me out recently where it seemed to offer me a window I have not seen in MEP, that gave me a choice of backups for a project but the project folder in C:\ Documents\Magix Projects\VPX8 only seemed to contain the one _MV file.

Another strange glitch with VPX is that another 2x windows pop up telling you that it is saving a backup and also the project folder, after which the mouse seems to get stuck (drags) on the arranger playhead creating a double arrow above it and can not be released until I left click off it somewhere in the timeline. Very annoying.

Sorry for the confusion - Terry and I are referring to MEP 2014 and earlier - Terry AFAIK did not upgrade to MEP 2015 which, IIRC, was the first version to show the behaviour of multiple BAK files in the same session.

Added:

To test this I started a new project in MEP 2016 and then edited through all versions back to MEP MX.

The behaviour I am seeing is MEP MX through to 2014 create a BAK file according to the scheduled time only while you are editing,  if you edit long enough you do get a rotating set of 10 BAK files, stop editing and there is no new BAK file generated while MEP is idle.

MEP 2016 generates BAK files even when idle.

Hi Peter,

John accurately summarised the behaviour I also experienced in MEP 2014 and earlier, and what I now get in MEP 2016.

Does anyone know if this was a deliberate design change in MEP 2016 (for what possible reason?)  or simply a mistake?

I also don't like the flurry of action that's seen on my working screen whenever those automatic saves are made. Were they not totally unseen in MEP 2104?

They were unseen, however, you may find as I did, that the screen would freeze for a second. This was most obvious when trying to drag an object.

At least now you can see some activity, which is better than the freeze.
