MEP 2013 will not accept a MPEG2 file

Monty76 wrote on 4/17/2013, 11:00 AM

When I try to import a particular MPEG2 file to the Movie Edit Pro 2013 timeline, it says "File format cannot be read".    However, I have successfully imported other MPEG files.

The strange thing is that I have had no problem importing this file into MEP 10 on Windows 98 and MEP 15 on Windows Vista.   Why can't  MEP 2013 accept it on Windows 7 ?    Is it something to do with Windows 7 ?

Hi

This is probably a codec issue.

Use GSpot (freeware) to analyse the mpg clip that will not load and see if it can render the clip - use the buttons under MS A/V bottom left of the GSpot window .  If the codecs are installed then it will it will render and play.  If not then the required codecs are not installed - this will be indicated in red in the video status window top right and audio status window lower left.

HTH

Hi

Try setting "program settings to defaults" in the "File" menu of MEP.

Thanks Scenestealer and johnebaker for very quick replies.

Putting the program settings to defaults made no difference.  The video clip could still not be imported.

I have downloaded and run GSpot (it works in Windows 7).   It said that both the video and audio codecs are installed, and "Render OK".   The clip played perfectly well in "Test".

So, I can't understand why MEP won't accept it.   It still says "File cannot be read" and "Make sure drive is not full or write protected".

Mystery !

Hi Monty76

I had that exact same mesage but in my case MEP would not allow me to drag any of its Xara3D title presets to the timeline. Thankfully the program reset fixed it. You probably need to contact Magix support.

Cheers

Thanks Scenestealer,

I have now updated MEP 2013, but it will still not accept the file.   So, I have sent a message to Magix Support.

Just to let you know what happened when I contacted Magix Support.

I uploaded the problem file to them, and they identified it as a codec problem.   They put me onto some software that would re-encode the file so that MEP 2013 would accept it.

Their reply was almost immediate, very impressive service.
