MEP 2013 - Why larger icons?

terrypin wrote on 11/12/2012, 4:17 PM

As far as I can recall, the 'Large icons' option for viewing items in the media pane was unchanged through at least MEP 16, 17 and MX. So is there some good reason I've missed why they are now larger in 2013? IMO it's a change for the worse, because fewer can be seen at one time. Here's an example:

Hi Terry

I think they are bigger so the Preview, Edit in preview monitor and Insert controls under them are a reasonable size.

It also depends on your screen size and how you are wotrking - for me the size is not a problem as I work with 2 x 22 inch 16:10 screens - with the panels laid out as shown in this image - the right screen is the preview monitor.

Are they not zoomable? AFAIK they have been resizable since MX.

What happens if you click on the + /- icon (or magnifying glass MX) in the title bar at top right of the media pool?

Having said that I can not see the title bar when I have effects > collage selected....?? I only see this bar when in the import Tab. Is this some setting in Windows or something? I have Vista. Mine are too small.

Strange.

Thanks Peter - missed that! (But see my later post with a flimsy excuse.)

So I spent a couple of hours yesterday re-writing a few macros that depended on clicking various icons in the positions long established in 17 and MX. All because I hadn't spotted that zoom tool after all this time!

As this setting is stored in the videodeluxe.ini file (as bigIconViewZoomFactor), the reason it was defaulting to a larger size was because that's the way it came and I'd never changed it.

I wonder how many other 'obvious' features I've still not used?

Peter,

It seems that one of the reasons I missed this (apart from premature senility) is that the zoom tool doesn't appear if you navigate to (say) Collages via Effects > Design Elements > Collages.

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/MEP2013-Collages-ViaEffects.jpg

Incidentally, does anyone know why the tree structure pane vanishes when you navigate to Collages with Import > Video Effects > Collage (my preferred method) ?

Hi Terry

Glad to be able to find you the odd new "Goodies".

It is well worthwhile reading the sales page where it says something like "50 new features" then "more" takes you to PDF with detailed improvements.

I think I understand now why you could see the +/- zoom tool in your left hand screen shot of 2013 and that is:- it is only available for collages if you go via the import folder tree view to the collages folder, staying in the left hand tree pane and not clicking the effects tab. So if I understand your last question correctly, this is the way you are trying to work, and I do not see why it doesn't do what you want? Your initial screen shots show that you got there somehow. Or did I misunderstand your last question?

Unfortunately however, I prefer to go straight to the effects tab > collages but resizing via the folder tree view does not change the collage sizes in tab view......but maybe this is the point of your last question (why the tree structure vanishes....).

Peter

Hi Peter,

I think we are singing from the same hymn sheet: "...the zoom tool doesn't appear if you navigate to (say) Collages via Effects > Design Elements > Collages"? IOW, it only appears if you navigate via Import - as you've confirmed.

The reason I mainly use Import > Video effects is that I actually use a one-click macro to takes me to Video Effects and I then click the the Collages folder which opens immediately. That route proved easier to write and apparently faster and more reliable. Afterwards I then usually then use Ctrl + Shift + 2 to return to my most used area, Size/Position.

I'm still not clear why the tree disappears?
