MEP 2013 No recognizing old Sony HD Camera

I am   using MEP  2013 on   Windows 8 machine. I  have  recently   started reusing  my  old Tape Style  HD  Sony Camera (HDR HC-1).  I  set up so that   MEP  will   open up  automatically  when  I   start  this   camera.  My  problem   is tha t  the  program  will not   recognize  this   camera as a HD  Camera  only  as   a  DV camera. When  I restart  the  program and   use the   the   record  feature  and   try to  select   HDV  it   will  see  the  sony  camera  but then  it   will  not   connct to it.  When  I  select  the   DV option and  choose  the  DV option  it   sees it.  WHen  I  look  at the   preview record window  the  video   looks  like  HD  quality  but   play when I  but the  video on time  time  line  and  play  it  baack it  look  more  SD  than HD. Has  any one  else had this  problem   with  older  HD  cameras?

think the answer may lie in how you are connecting your camera to your computer.  On the U2U forum of another video editing software someone posted that they could not get that software to read HD video from their camera when connected via firewire to a Win 8 machine.  Unfortunately, no answer was ever found to this problem since it appeared to be somehow linked to the Win 8 firewire driver - perhaps the data throughput rate for HD is too high for firewire to handle? - or, as with Win 7, M$ chose to automatically install a "new" driver (with Win 7 for almost any FW device it proved necessary to install the "Legacy" driver.)  I don't know whether the Legacy driver is still available to Win 8 nor if installing it will help you with your problem.  Sorry not to be more helpful!

Thank  you  so  very  much,

I will  go to   sony  website  and   see  if they  have  a  legacy  driver.

Went  to  the   Sony  website  and the  say  it   should   be  compatible  with  Win 8.  they  have  a  seperate  software  that  I  can  download. I will  down  tonight  and  let   you know  if this  solves  the problem.

Was  NOT  happey with the   results of using  MPEG ,  the   quality was  really inferior to  what I  expected . I think   i  wil go  back to  using  the  DV camera  feature  and  just  export  it to   MPEg format.

Hi

Just o clarify

Emmrecs is talking about the Firewire drivers (IEE1394) not the camera drivers - if you have the 64 bit Firewire driveres installed then you need to also install the legacy drivers, which are 32 bit, as well.  MEP should then be able to contol the camera properly.

I did have a problem on my old Canon HV10 where I could not get the record window to recognize the HD content on my camera but it turned out to be that there was DV and HDV content on the same tape which seemed to confuse things.

Also is there an Output setup in the camera's menu that gives you a choice of DV or HDV or Auto or something?

Update 6/2/2013
Sony  website  did not  have  any  drivers for  my  camera and  they said that  Windows 8  is  compatible with my  HDR-HC1  camera, but  when I  tried  to  use the  HDV  option in  MAGIX it  still  would  not   recognize it :(
OK this  is  wierd  but if  it  works then  great:
When I first open  the  dialogue to   use the DV option  but  I  checked the  "save as  an  MPEG"  the   software  recognizes  the  camera  as  an  HDV. I will let you know  if the  quality is truly HD.

Thank you  for all  of  your  help :)

I think this may be because HDV is actually MPEG format?

I have Canon HV20 which is also a HDV tape camcorder.  Windows 8 does not need the legacy driver - at least , I haven't needed it with any software.

Connect your Sony Camcorder - turn it to Playback
You should not have HDV and DV on the same tape.  It does confuse software easily.  If you do, make sure the tape is positioned correct at the begining of HDV section FIRST.

Wait for Windows 8 to recognized the camcorder. You should hear a sound
Open MEP2013
Type 'R' to brign up the record source selection
Choose HDV camera (NOT DV camera)
HDV record dialog box opens and should show a frame of video in the preview as Paused
Change Record destination and file name as needed
hit record Big Red Button

IF the camcorder is not being recognized, double check the tape to see what mode was actually recorded.  As pointed out in message below, most camcorders will auto switch between DV and HDV in playback mode.  You can check the Sony manual to see if you can force it to HDV ONLY mode.

@ggrussell I  tried to   get the  HDV option in  MEP 2013 to  recognize  my  cam ...it  sees   the  cam but   will  not   connect.  I  have  my sony  iLink option  set to   HDV . I am  using  a  video  tape  that   has only  HDV  video.

I tried  the  using  the  MPEG  option, the  video looks   distorted.
