MEP 2013: Minor bug in object display

terrypin wrote on 11/23/2012, 10:38 AM

I noticed a week or two ago that on the lowest vertical track zoom level, video/image objects lose their little image. I'd assumed it would be seen and fixed, but I see it remains in 12.0.2.2.

(In Program Settings > Video/Audio I have 'Simple video object...' checked.)

Hi Terry

Are you saying this is a bug?

It is the same in MX and 17.

I think it is correct that the image disappears as it would be so small as to be useless, and at minimum vertical zoom only the top bar and the audio is visible - the image portion is gone all together.

Hi John,

Thanks - I'm obviously mistaken!

The only explanation I can imagine for not seeing it in MX and 17 is that I've never ever used that extreme zoom level in previous versions. The 2013 project I was working on that prompted this had an exceptional number of tracks, so I guess that's why I had to reduce the track heights to a minimum.

However, I still think it's a questionable design change from 16 and earlier to 17 and later. The loss of readabilty is progressive, and the difference between the last and the last but one is tiny, as you see here:

Also, it seems that there's something strange in the other direction in 17 onwards, i.e. increasing the height. In 16 there were just 14 zoom levels, giving a good range. In 2013 I gave up after clicking + about 200 times. Well before that I was looking at individual pixels!

Hi Terry

In MEP 16 the lack of being able to display a lot of tracks without going full screen with the timeline was a major problem for me as I often have up to 20+ tracks in use.

It is a lot better now as I work with dual screens and can keep the timeline in the bottom half of the editing screen and get to lower tracks quickly with the reduced track height.

The only annoyance now is the disappearing track numbers.

200 x clicking - that is dedication

Hi John,

Must be some misunderstanding here, as I'm definitely not following you on this.

MEP 16 Plus had the full 99 tracks (as did MEP 17, 15 and 14.)

There were 14 zoom levels in all those versions, more than enough. And level 1 included the very useful image section. Like icons: no detail but an adequate visual indicator.

It's in MX and 2013 that it has gone pear-shaped IMO! In fact I'll stick my neck out and say that MX (not 17) introduced a bug in this area which I apparently never noticed for the reasons explained and that bug remains in 2013.

MX is slightly worse than 2013, as the lowest two zoom levels have no image section.

And both versions have an apparently unlimited numebr of zoom levels, useless beyond about the 10th.

Here are some images to illustrate the above points.

Hi Terry

In MEP 16 the minimum track height was not as small as in the later versions so you could not see as many at once in the timeline pane - as seen in your picture with the tracks at minimum height.

If I wanted to see, for example, 16 tracks I had to expand the timeline pane upwards to get them all in.

Feedback from Magix Support:

"Thanks for the feedback. I will pass it on. Possibly the lack of preview images in the track is the result of some modificiations to the engine that maybe cannot be avoided (e.g. for performance reasons), but maybe this change can be reverted. Would be useful. I also agree that the lack of limit to the zooming in is pointless and causes potential problems. So, let's see how we can work with this."
