MEP 17/MX/2013: Sizing/display bug

terrypin wrote on 11/13/2012, 11:42 AM

This one is consistently reproducible here, but I'd appreciate a confirmation please in case it's unique to me.

I think the illustrations are self-explanatory, but the bottom line is easily stated: when an object is imported but then replaced with one of the same name after being edited externally, its aspect ratio is corrupted by MEP.

This example shows a landscape JPG which is imported, deleted, edited to portrait format and re-imported - when it becomes distorted. Only in those three recent MEP versions. Surprised I haven't noticed it before...

Hi Terry

Did you delete the temp files for that image before re-importing?

I regularly alter still images, and occasionally video, and have no problems wih changes in the aspect ratio -  I make sure there are no temp files associated with the file(s) I have changed before re-importing.

John

Hi John,

Not sure I follow. What 'temp files' do you mean? The steps are simply:

1. Drag Photo01.jpg to the timeline. It's 1600 x 900 and displays correctly.

2. Open Photo01.jpg in IrfanView, crop it to some arbitrary portrait format, and save it with same name.

3. Drag the new portrait image to the timeline Photo01.jpg (either before or after deleting the original landscape). It appears with the gross distortion I showed.

No new files are created, either in the project folder or the source folder. Should I be looking somewhere else? I don't really see why MEP would create temporary files for still images?

So I take it you don't get the same result?

Hi Terry

Following your sequence I get the same results.

I misunderstood your original post in the sequence you were doing things - when I jump to image editing I have a habit of closing down MEP which clears unwanted data stored in the cache which I think is the file mxfilerelatedcache.mxc2.

I started doing this because of PSP 10 turning off the Windows 7 Aero scheme and often messing up MEP when I had finished with PSP and went back to MEP.

Now I have PSP X5 - I really do not have to shut down MEP - some habits are difficult to get out of  .

The sizing error also occurs when you adjust an image externally the other way as well ie portrait to landscape.

Hi John,

Thanks, appreciate your testing and confirmation.

It's as if MEP (from 17 onwards) is failing to discard data after an object has been deleted. Seems to be only cropping that causes it, although I expect resizing will too. Other basic editing like adding text or changing colours is properly displayed.

I'll report formally as a bug. It could be contributing in obscure ways to other issues.
