menu encoding failed - MEP 2018

nick_vid wrote on 8/16/2018, 1:02 PM

Hello, I have a sudden issue with the menu encoding on MEP 2018. Its on my laptop and every other DVD I have edited and rendered has been perfect, up until this one.

Its nothing technical video wise, mainly just 1 camera with fades and titles during the 90minute film. I have added chapter points at various points as I usually do, nothing different and using the same menu template as before. Exactly the same as the previous DVD I made on the program and machine.

But it seems to render ok, then come up with an error message saying 'menu encoding failed' before doing anything to disc.

The only change has been an automatic windows 10 update. A previous windows update caused a sound issue, so has the new update caused an issue with menu encoding? If so, how do you fix it?

I have the error log which I will post below. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Nick

Hi

. . . . errNo 13 - menu rendering failed . . . .

Which disc menu template did you use and what changes were made to it ?

I'll attach a pic of it, its basically a custom one for my car racing DVDs. Ive been using the same template since 2016 and not had this issue before. I have also tried a standard un-edited template as well as a test and it did exactly the same thing.

Sorry to but in but I just had to ask Nick an unrelated question!

Hi Nick, are you the same Nick that I trained at the Isle College in Wisbech for a media National Diploma about 18 years ago? It was the Mildenhall bangers that caught my eye.

Just wondering 🙂

@nick_vid

It would appear that you only have Chapters and no Film menu, this is not allowed - you must have at least one film menu - why this worked previously is a mystery - also there does not appear to be a link to the next chapter page(s) or you have removed some of the chapter links from the page.

If you want only the Chapter sections to be playable as individual movies then I would suggest you try a multi movie project using this technique.

Hi Roger, yeah Its me from Isle College. Still doing the racing videoing, although its not as good as it was a few years ago with the racing changes and the rise of you tube!

I dont want a film menu, just a basic menu page that comes up when you put the DVD in the player so you can select which race you want. Just the same as I have been doing since 2016 on MEP. I was actually thinking there could be an issue with the chapter points as Ive tried using a different menu template but the same chapter points.

I dont want all the chapters on one page, neither do I want thumbnails of each, just text to show what race it is and a screen shot as a background. I dont have any titles done in the template, I design a background on a different program and save it as a jpeg, then just use it as a background picture.

Every other DVD Ive made using this custom template has worked, and when you are filming at least 2 race events every weekend, thats a lot of master discs, and this is the only time Ive had this error!

Is there any way of undoing the latest update? Im wondering if that has caused the issue, but I will try re-doing my chapter points.

Anything else I can try?

RogerGunkel wrote on 8/17/2018, 7:09 AM

Hi Nick,

Glad to hear that you are still doing the racing vids, I remember well the conversations we had about the possibility of doing it as a business. Claire sends her regards by the way 🙂

Regarding the dvd problem, it could be the windows update if you previously had no problem. You can uninstall the last update by going into the settings menu, then windows update>update history>uninstall last update. May help if that is the only difference to previously. I only had the update a couple of days ago, but Claire is due to make a new dvd over the next few days, so will find out if we have a problem.

You must have a film menu - did you look at the tutorial I pointed you to - it does what you want, in a way to ensure you have a correctly defined disc menu - the difference is that you have multiple timelines, in your case one for each race and any extras eg a crash compilation you add.

From an existing project you can create this quickly by cutting each race from the first timeline and adding it to a new timeline in the same project, and you can add chapter markers as well for each individual race if you wish.

MEP will take care of the menus for you, they will look the same as what you are currently trying to do. Here is an example of the timeline

and here the different menus generated in MEP

I did have a look but that seems a long winded way round it when the issue has only just occurred. I do actually still have the 2016 version of MEP installed on the laptop so thought I would load the project into that. It seems to have loaded in ok other than changing the size of the fonts on the titles for some reason.

But I have just tried to render the whole thing in 2016 MEP using the same menu template as before and it works fine with no 'menu encoding' errors. And plays back on a DVD ok too.

So looks like its the updates on the 2018 version that are causing it. Ive now got to re-size the titles and I'll stick with the 2016 version I think.

Personally I think that is layered out a bit easier too and Im not doing 4K stuff (mainly as it would need all the cameras and camera people I work with to upgrade everything).

I wont give up with the new version completely, but going back to 2016 has got me out of a muddle for now at least. I may need to re-design a fresh custom template possibly.

Roger, PM me and we can have a catch up sometime soon. Ive got a few hectic weekends with a stock car world final this weekend and crash for cancer charity event Bank Holiday, and a house move too!

Hi

. . . . I did have a look but that seems a long winded way round it when the issue has only just occurred . . . .

The original tutorial was written for my old PC which baulked at handling more than 3 timelines in one project, hence the roundabout way.

With an existing project eg the one you posted the image of, it should take 5 - 10 mins to change it to a multimovie project - cut each chapter section objects and paste them into a new timeline in the same project ensuring that the sections all start at time 0:00 in the their new timeline.

MEP does the rest when you go to the disc menu editing - make sure you turn on the Film menu option.
