Mediapool imports my landscape photos distorted

Carly-Simons wrote on 11/11/2023, 3:59 PM

Movie Studio 2024 Platinum has a Mediapool you have to use to import photos to a project. When I locate the photos there that I want to use in my video, the landscape photos appear rotated into portrait and distorted, thus unusable. I tried adding them to the project and then using the orientation tool under the View/Animation tab to rotate but it remains distorted badly. I cannot find a fix for this. It's infuriating. Why don't my pictures retain their original properties from their source on my computer? If this has no answer, I cannot use this program at all.

@Carly-Simons Hi, can you share a full screen picture or a screen capture video of what happens?

Use the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment to upload pics or vids.

@Carly-Simons Hmm interesting, there might be an obvious answer that i don't know about but I suspect it's an issue with the actual photos not Magix,

Can you share the picture of the person up the ladder, we can then see if it's your set-up or the picture itself?

It needs to be the orig photo so you need to share it on a file sharing site such as Google Drive.

  1. Open Google, top right is a sq of dots - Open Google Drive.
  2. Drag that photo onto the Google Drive window, let it upload.
  3. Right click on the file on screen - Share.
  4. A window will pop up, General Access - choose anyone with the link - Copy link.
  5. Then on here in a new comment at the top there's a chain button, paste the link on there
  6. Click Comment

Thank you for your thoughts. I've inspected the photo properties and they're just jpeg images and I've imported them to Vegas Movie Studio 17 with absolutely no problem until trying to use them with Magix Movie Studio Platinum 2024 for this project.

@Carly-Simons

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

My Nikon DSLRs have two options in the shooting menu of which the data is written to the image files

Auto Image rotation should be left on while Rotate tall is an instruction for the camera to rotate the image in the cameras' monitor which when used shows the picture in portrait mode when viewing the cameras' monitor in Landscape. However. Some third party editing programs such as Photoshop will see that instruction and rotate the image again which then displays incorrectly. It could be that or a similar instruction baked into the file. I have got into the habit of leaving Rotate tall off and rotating the camera monitor to view while shooting instead.

Ray.

Hi.

A second thought if that is not your problem.

Once imported onto the timeline, right click the object on the timeline and select object properties.

One the dialogue box opens, click on the Image section and select the correct ratio from the drop down menu.

Sometimes if the files' metadata cannot be read correctly it can be adjusted manually.

Thank you! I tried your recommendation on changing the ratio and afterwards I was able to rotate it successfully. I'm not sure the exact nature of why the data on these specific files distort, but I'm grateful you could help me figure out a way to restore them. Thank you for taking the time to help!

@Carly-Simons

No problem. Glad to help.

Have had similar problems in the past myself. I think between so many different manufacturers implementing their own code into their cameras' files to accomplish certain results that may be specific to only them, that developers of programs can't either keep up or can't be bothered to add what is in effect non standard practice when camera manufacturers introduce new features and code into their products. Thankfully Magix has ways to manually correct most of them.

Vegas Movie Studio was developed by a different team of programmers and may have used a different method of reading some of the meta data which was successful for your images in the past but each set of developers have different ways of tackling the same problems. I suppose there are just too many variables for any one set of developers to keep abreast of.
