Media Pool - Display options (backup Program settings)

Can-Dive wrote on 3/20/2025, 9:14 PM

Oddly, this problem seemed to occur about the same time in my VPX16 and MMS2024. In the Media Pool, there are 3 display options; List, Details and Large Icons. I typically have it set to Large Icons. Lately I noticed that when starting either editor, the Media Pool would always default to List. I would change it back to Large Icons, close the program, start it and Media Pool displayed the List again!

To correct this problem in both editors, I reset my program settings to Default. Of course, this means I had to reconfigure the settings and file directories to my liking. It's relatively easy to do, just an annoyance. Just wondering if others set up set up their program settings and then save the ini file as the backup (bak) so they don't have to reconfigure their program settings if they need to reset it? Or is this not recommended?

If I have to do a reset, I save (when/if I remember!) the part of the ini that contains the "Create link for folder" entries, but that's all.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

. . . . wondering if others set up set up their program settings and then save the ini file as the backup (bak) . . . .

This 'feature' or 'bug' crept in a while ago.

In previous versions once you set the icon size it held until a reset of the program settings.

In VPX/MMS the Large icons value is stored in the ini file when you save the project and close the program, however on the next start it defaults back to Details.

I do keep backups of the ini files, because all my PC folder settings are changed, they point to a different drive, and I use Paintshop Pro and Sound Forge Pro as the external editors.

Added: I have put in a support request.

Just to confirm, I assume you copy the folder link section into a text file and then copy & paste into the videodeluxe.ini when required?

@johnebaker

I noticed a .bak file that is used when the program resets the program settings. Once I'm happy with my program settings, I can make a copy of the ini file, rename it .bak and it will be used if I need to reset my defaults? I suppose if there is an update or something and the .bak becomes incompatible for some reason, I can always delete the ini and the system will regenerate a new default? Am I correct in my logic?

As for the feature/bug, my system is now working as expected after resetting my program settings; meaning if I select Large Icons and close the editor, upon restarting the program, the Media Pool is displaying Large Icons rather than defaulting back to List. Is this a random problem?

AFAIK the reset does not use the .bak file.

I copy the ini file, to a backup folder on another drive, restoration is just a matter of dropping the backup copy into the appropriate location, no renaming necessary.

. . . . I suppose if there is an update or something and the .bak becomes incompatible for some reason, I can always delete the ini and the system will regenerate a new default? Am I correct in my logic? . . .

That is correct, in fact deleting the ini file is an option if the program reset does not work.
