The answer to this depends on two factors ie the time each slide is to be shown for and, IMHO, the real limiting factor - how quickly the viewer becomes bored. If you have ever sat through a Powerpoint presentation. . . . .

To answer the question in another way - the maximum run time for a slideshow on the timeline to be burned to DVD or Blu-Ray disc is 2 hours.

For video that is to be viewed on a computer/projector etc, there is a theoretical maximum, depending on the frame rate of the project, of approximately 1 million frames eg at 25 fps - 11 hrs runtime.

Personally I would not make a single viewing session longer than 15 - 20 mins.
