Magix 2024: dvd plays on PC but not on dvd players!

Don-Fredrick wrote on 9/5/2023, 9:26 PM

I have created many test files with Magix 2024. The DVDs I create play fine on my PC and other PCs but will NOT play on DVD players hooked up to TVs. I have tried many different things. I have burned the DVDs with Magix. I have created the files with Magix and then burned them to DVDs using NERO software.I have tried DVD-R discs from Verbatim, Sony DVD-R discs, and Sony re-writeable discs. I have tried two different DVD burners (one Blu-Ray and the other not Blu-Ray). I use Windows 10. The processor is i7 4770, 32 GB RAM, GeForce GE 1030 graphics card. I am burning through DVDs like crazy and NONE will play on two different DVD players I have tried. I am running out of patience and ready to reinstall the 2016 version! I SOMETIMES get this message and cannot burn a DVD at all. When I can burn a DVD it plays on various PCs but not on DVD players hooked up to TVs.

project burning failed

Hi

In Magix Movie Studio 2024 (MMS 2024) - Magix is the name of the company not the product.

Try the following:

  • Use the Image recorder option in the MMS 2024 burn dialog to create an ISO image, do not change any of the burn settings.

  • If the image is successfully created, test the ISO by mounting it - right click in File Explorer - it will appear as a DVD drive and can be played with either DVD/BD player software or VLC.

  • Burn the ISO file to disc using Nero's Recorder, Burn ISO option, setting the burn speed to 1/2 that the discs are rated for.

  • Test the burned disc in VLC again and the DVD players you have.

Notes:

  1. In the Burn dialog if you change the Bitrate to maximum, or change any of the other advanced settings this can create unplayable discs.

  2. From your computer specification the above process is going to take a while as there is little to no hardware acceleration (HWA) that can be used.

    - if the Intel processor/GPU drivers are up to date, see this Intel article for the integrated HD4600 iGPU in the processor. rolling back the drivers as detailed in the articl will provide some HWA

    - the GT 1030 cannot be used for HWA - it does not support NVENC

If I can figure out what that means I will try it. But if all that is necessary it is a faulty product. Imagine your car not moving when you place it into drive gear and the automaker responds to your complaint by saying, "Try putting it in reverse while tuning the radio to 98.7 and lowering all four windows at the same time. That should work!"

I was able to get it to work, as you suggested, by creating the ISO file and then burning that to a disc in a separate step. My version of Nero is older and does not have a burn ISO option but I was still able to create the DVD, which then played on my television via a Sony DVD player. I will have to write all this down because I will forget what I did the next time I create a birthday DVD for friends! Thanks for the help. I know my graphics card is not wonderful but I do not play video games and do not care much about speed. While I am creating DVDs I keep busy doing things away from the PC.

Thanks for the help!

P.S. I would still like the product to work "normally"!

@johnebaker

Hi John EB,

Isn't the BurnR program that comes with MMS2024 the same one that came with MEP2016? Same version?

Hi Don.

Glad you have a resolution to your problem.

The thing is Magix Movie Studio is designed to work with Windows 10 and 11 and with more modern computer components. Especially the encoding and processing capabilities found on new graphics cards. Third party graphics cards now play a major role in all newer video editing packages. Not just the Magix Editors.

Some of the errors you were experiencing may be down the program demanding the hardware work faster, which it can't. I think one reason John Baker suggested a slower burn speed was so the laser had more time to burn more accurately and the lasers may have lost some power over time.

So it's not that the program doesn't work so much as equipment compatibility. But there are workarounds such as the ones John suggested.

It would be like trying to put a modern engine into an old car. Not impossible but one heck of a faff.

Ray.

My version of NERO is also old. My PC is fine but the graphics card is nothing special. When I am in the market for a new one I will choose something recommended by Magix. Thanks!

@Don-Fredrick

Hi

As @CubeAce has commented, I suspect this is a hardware issue with the the 2 burners, not the program.

The 2 burners which, if they are the same age as the rest of the PC, may be struggling to burn the disc correctly as they may not have settings in the drives firmware for the discs being used. Without this info they will default to a power level that may be too high for the discs which in turn can cause issues with playback hence the error message 'DBK CBurnDevSupport::BurnProject(): 224 - write error occurred on disc'.

As far as the procedure I gave you using ISO files , this is my standard method so I can check that the 'burn' completes correctly, play the disc on the computer with VLC - this is when I may spot errors or tweaks needed to the menus, chapters or the video itself, all without wasting discs and money.

I then burn the final ISO to DVD-RW or BD-RE (rewritable) discs for testing in my players and if everything is OK I then duplicate the rewritable disc using Nero to DVD-R or BD-R discs, again saves on wasting discs and money.

The rewritable discs are then erased ready for the next project.

Thanks for your advice! I will plan on ordering a new DVD burner and a new graphics card the next time my wife is out of town!
