After editing a 445min audio file, I was halfway done and saved. half of the file disappeared. (about 3 1/2 hours work). Is there anyway to recover this?
You can 'try' looking for your Sound Forge 'Temp' folder. Which is usually in User name> Appdata> Local folder. (Appdata is a system folder and normally hidden) To find out if that is your temp file location, go to Options> Preferences> General and look at 'Temporary files and record folder'
Otherwise you may try a recovery app. I have recovered files using Recuva, but the audio went missing under different circumstances. The files may have cryptic names so search by date and/or size.
445 mins !! That is over 7 hours of audio.. The file size limit for PCM <.wav> files is normally 2 GB. (4 GB option in Sound Forge Pro) A 44.1/16 PCM stereo file is about 10 MB per minute (5 MB /min. for single-channel mono) It is probably too late now, but for very large PCM files, save as a 'Wave64' <.w64> which does not have the 2 or 4 GB size restriction.
There was a typo in my post =45 min file. Everything you posted I have tried. There was no temp file ( I do know where it is located). A ;large part of the file just disappeared. i.e. when the file stopped saving and had built its levels more than half of the wave was gone. Nasically, just portions of the wave remained. Tech support is nearly impossible. Just takes you in circles. I am still mystified at this.
I have the utmost sympathy for the frustration you must be feeling for the loss of so much work - it's happened to me years ago with video editing in Vegas Pro. My heart just sank when it happened.
I use Sound Forge a lot, but the project lengths are in the 10s of seconds or less - max 3 minutes. While sadly I can't suggest anything to solve your present problem, I'd like to suggest a process that might avoid or minimise a future repeat, particularly appropriate to long form projects. And that is to regularly save, but with a different file name each time. For example, '[name]1', [name]2, [name]3, etc. That way, if the problem re-occurs, it may only involve the loss of 15 minutes work rather than hours of work. Also, save a copy to another drive like a portable HD which are low cost these days.
