Lost ability to monitor recorded sound in SF 13

Paul-Goldschmidt wrote on 4/24/2023, 8:18 AM

I was trying to change the pitch of an existing recording. I moved the "RATE" slider at the bottom of the screen back a bit.

Now I cannot move the slider back to "1.00", no matter what I do.

I have also lost the ability to monitor (listen to) what I am recording. Sound Forge will no longer send what I am recording through my sound interface's speakers/headphone jack. The VU meters don't activate while I am attempting to record either.

Any existing sound file that I try to play plays normally. The slider sets itself back to 1.00 during playback, but then re-unsets itself when I stop the playback.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Sound Forge twice, but this did not help.

There is no help topic that addresses this issue.

There appears to be no setting that can remedy the slider issue or my monitoring issue.

How can I solve this issue? Sound Forge was working just fine until I moved the slider as described above.

I am running Windows 10 on an Intel-based machine.

@Paul-Goldschmidt You could try to reset the program settings under the File menu.

Or maybe just a restart (not shutdown) of the computer might solve the problem, in case you didn't try that.

I did both of the things that you suggested. I first shut down and restarted my PC. Then I reset the program settings as you directed.

The problem remains unsolved.

The sound source is not getting to Sound Forge. Check your 'Windows' sound settings for 'Recording' and choose the device you wish to record. Then go to the SF menu "Options> Preferences> Audio" and select  the device that shows the source. Typically 'Windows Classic Wave driver' or 'MS Sound Mapper".

I was trying to change the pitch of an existing recording. I moved the "RATE" slider at the bottom of the screen back a bit. Now I cannot move the slider back to "1.00", no matter what I do.

Drag the scrub control's upper facing arrow ^ towards the center, which should reset it to the default 1:00.

btw, welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users community @Paul-Goldschmidt.

I tried to, but it wouldn't stay after I dragged it.

There's obviously a bug of some kind somewhere.

Oh, and whenever I try to record from my condenser mic (that's the one I use by default) which is going through the analogue inputs on my mixer (it works OK) and into a Focusrite USB sound interface (it works OK), despite the fact that I don't get VU readings or real-time monitoring of my microphone input, Sound Forge will still record whatever I say into my mic. The resulting recording plays back normally.

More confusion. In my system tray, at the lower left side of my screen, I see a microphone symbol which I don't recall seeing before when recording voice tracks through Sound Forge. Is SF trying to access the built-in "microphone" input in my computer, while despite this, receiving input from my USB sound interface?

As I said, there's a bug here someplace. And it's very confusing.

Thank you. I hope we can crack this issue soon.

Oh yes, when I play a standard WAV music file in Sound Forge 13, the scrub control (not the arrow) resets itself to 1.00. The sound file plays normally.

I do not have a Focusrite USB sound interface to check out. There has been past topics and comments from other folks with the Focusrite USB interface, so search in this forum which may help I have not read of, or am I aware of bugs you describe. You can also request a Magix support ticket.

I have used other USB interfaces, and always select the Classic Windows Wave Driver which stated the USB interface, and SF records without issue. Choosing the ASIO-4-All' device has worked as well with my external USB preamps from Sound Devices and Zoom F series recorders.

I tried what you've suggested, and it did not solve the problem. Obviously there is a major bug in Sound Forge (version 13.0, build 141, 64-bit). Oh yes, Sound Forge has been working perfectly with my sound setup for well over a year, until about two days ago.

I do not believe that my sound interface is to blame for the issues I am experiencing.

@Paul-Goldschmidt Your description of the slider behaviour sounds fine. The rate slider sits at 0 when playback is stopped and at 1 during playback (or another value like 2 or 0.5 in case you set it with a right click on the yellow arrow).

Now your only problem seems to be that no sound is going on or is coming out of the audio interface. Do you use the Focusrite ASIO driver in the Sound Forge preferences?

In case I have a problem with my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 I unplug it from the computer, restart the computer and plug out back in. At rare occasions the Focusrite driver might get unstable and it won't work again correctly without unplugging. Even a restart might not help.

hi @Paul-Goldschmidt...as @SP. said, the rate slider is doing what it's designed to do...it's supposed to be at 1.0 when audio is playing, and 0 when no audio is playing...this is as it always should be.

i also use a focusrite scarlett 2i4 in my office, and a focusrite scarlett solo at home, and when i open SFP13 and SFP 15, it works just fine. seeing since version 13 hasn't had an update or been altered in any way since the summer of 2020, it's probably not a bug...the program hasn't changed, so most likely either the settings in the program have changed, or windows settings have changed. i know you've already probably checked this (just trying to cover the bases), but have you clicked: View > Record Options > Monitor and made sure that monitor is switched to On? If you've reset the preferences, then it turned your monitor off and that could explain that issue. again, i know you've probably already done this, i just thought i'd throw it out there because i don't think anyone's mentioned it yet. in any event, i hope you get it worked out!

Hi

The issue is very unlikely to be a bug given that it was working and now is not.

What changed on the computer between working and not working, eg Windows upgrade or update etc.

@rraud commented - The sound source is not getting to Sound Forge.

If you are running Windows 11 check that Windows, Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone, Let Desktop apps access your microphone is on.
