lose preferences after SF12.1 upgrade?

ShaneHope wrote on 8/4/2018, 10:08 AM

Hi,

Just installed the SF 12.1 64-bit update (I'm on a Win 7 64-bit PC) and upon opening SF it seems to have lost my preferences. Is this intended (incompatible pref files?) or a bug? Any chance I can recover the settings? Just to be clear it seems to be everything (audio devices, plugin folders, window layouts, key mapping, etc.)

Cheers,

Shane

The 'Window layouts' and custom keyboard shortcuts are in the 12.0 folder, "C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Sound Forge Pro\", copy/save the <keyboard.ini> file and the <.ForgeWindowLayout> files to paste in the new 12.1 folder at the same location after re-installation.

NOTE: by default, the User/AppData folder is normally a hidden Windows system folder. so it will need to be temporarily visible. In a Windoes Explorer folder, check-mark Vew> Hidden items.

Unfortunately, the custom toolbar icons will have to be manually re-done. I do not know where the parameters for those are. If anyone knows, please share.

Cheers for the reply Rick. Yeah I found those but, like you say, a lot of things aren't included like the custom toolbars. Another big one, for me, was the VSTs. All my organisation of plugins has gone (hidden lots of unused plugins, grouped the rest by type, like reverb, compression, eq, etc). I have a lot of plugins so it's kinda pain. I think next time it should be clear in the patch notes and/or during the update installation that settings will be lost, which ones, how to export/import them, etc. I would have put off upgrading a few days as I'm mid-project if I had known.

In fact, maybe a more user friendly way of storing/transferring ALL settings/presets/etc could be looked into? They seem all over the place as it stands.

Hi, I found a workaround to deal with the lost preferences problem (Win 10, 64bit). Simply open "Regedit" and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Magix, SOUND FORGE Pro. Then erase folder "12.1" and rename folder "12.0" to "12.1".

This worked for me very well. Program prefs, VST, toolbar etc. are back!! good luck! jko

Top man - worked a treat! Everything seems fine again. Note, this was on Win 7 as well.

Thanks for the fix!

Please find a batch file below for copying your registry keys automatically to version 12.1:
