Looking for effect

Mark-Soderquist wrote on 1/24/2022, 3:43 PM

Ok so, I'm looking for a special effect I want to use in my next short fiction film. I am going to film/video a chase scene and I'm going to use a DJI mini 2 camera drone to fly next to the action. The drone will video in super smooth video. I want to reproduce the look of a 1950-1980s vibration camera look the way it had to be filmed from a moving truck. So far I can't find this effect (vibration cam) in the Magix tools. Is there a plug in I can buy? Or other means to achieve this effect?

Hi Mark, and welcome to the user to user forums.

You mean a plugin like New Blue Elements 3 Ultimate?

Thanks for the response. Yes, something like that. It has to be compatible with my Magix Video Edit pro 2021 Premium. Looks like New Blue is compatible with (Magix Vegas Pro 17+, Magix Video Pro X, Magix Movie Studio 18+) Does that cover my Magix Video Edit pro 2021 program?

@Mark-Soderquist

It works on my copy of MEP 2022.

If there is a trial version why not try it first?

@Mark-Soderquist Hi, i have a short list of NewBlue plugins, all came as free offers with upgrades of Magix Edit Pro Premium over the yrs , so your answer is yes 👍

@Mark-Soderquist

Hi,

You can achieve this effect for free in MEP.

Take a shaky video with a duration equivalent to the duration of the effect you desire.

Apply a VEGAS stabilization effect.

Save the effect as shake.IFX for example in the Uservideoeffetcs folder.

You will be able to apply this effect on your drone video.

Greetings DéDé, I like your thinking. I'll have to try creating that effect tomorrow.

I do like simplicity; not as much as "for free" though.

@sasiuk 👍 I was wondering about that, filming with maybe a hand held phone out of a car window, then somehow transfer the data/movement to the drone video, but didn't know how in MEP, might have a go at that 👍

Yes this sounds like a good idea. It's bad weather here in MT now but will try that soon.

Former user wrote on 1/25/2022, 1:39 PM

@sasiuk Thanks @Mark-Soderquist Interesting 👍 Like you i don't have footage from outside, so i filmed my fire with my phone, i turned off Video Stabilization in the phone settings & deliberately shook the camera.

In MEP i applied Vegas Stabilization, saved it & applied it to a jpg because i know the jpg would have no movement,

My fire doesn't move past the car window like an outside scene would (thankfully 😁) so how that would translate you'd have to experiment, film the scene moving past or just film a static inside part of the car just to get the 'shake' data, This certainly looks like a cheaper solution & maybe more realistic than generated effect 👍

Hi Gid.

Is the variation in length from the recorded effect sped up or slowed down by the variation difference between the effect and the 'clip'?

@CubeAce I would say no, although the pic is half the length the shake seems very similar, it's not 2x the speed, i tried dragging the picture to the same length as the fire vid with the shake effect loaded, it just filled the length of the jpg with the effect but wasn't altered in speed,

In this vid the fire vid is unaltered, the tree/sky jpg just has the saved shaking effect added,

@sasiuk Thanks @Mark-Soderquist I

Here is what I came up with for test footage today. My intent was to duplicate the look of a 1950-70s camera truck filming an action movie so I wanted it to be subtle. I think I did that. I shot the effect footage (that worked) out the side window of a pickup doing 25-30 mph on a gravel road with camera resting right on the door frame. Other effect footage was too smooth or too jumpy. thanks again for all the help!

Hi Gid.

Thanks for the additional information.

@Mark-Soderquist

Hi Mark. Just remember that shaking movement is also speed related. You may want to speed up the footage or slow it down and make a few different versions of the shaking to edit into the clips to add realism. The camera shouldn't shake if the 'truck' isn't moving. 🤨😉

Yes I know the camera shouldn't shake when there isn't movement. I was just matching clip lengths as an experiment. Now I know I can do it. Speed, clip length, road bumps all come into play. Thanks for all the help!

Former user wrote on 1/25/2022, 4:50 PM

@Mark-Soderquist @CubeAce 👍 Yep i noticed the need to slow down or stop the shake when the vehicle isn't moving, but i know your video was just a test, you've got to start somewhere 👍 so I've just been looking into the 'control' side of things, but i can't find anything at the mo, no keyframes can be added, shame there's no controls in the stabilization effect itself, If you bought a stabilization plugin you'd have more control, but for the price you could buy any other plugin 😂 when i duplicate & stack them, it's hard to blend between shaking & not shaking, When i cut the event up & only apply the effect to parts it's a bit too stop/start.

CubeAce wrote on 1/25/2022, 5:19 PM

@Former user

Hi Gid.

I think you would have to speed the shaky clip up or down and re-apply the stabilisation for each speed and give each effect it's own name and edit in as required. And to think I spend most of my time trying to get my shots as smooth as that drone shot.😂
