Linking "videos" or "projects" question

Eric-Elliott wrote on 7/7/2024, 1:20 PM

Wow! I don't know how, but I got Movie Studio 2025 working on a very basic level finally!! I just knocked out a bunch of short videos!

I saved them all as individual projects, but I want to link them or make one video ("project") out of them and save that as an MP4 file for later posting to YouTube. I want to be able to put in transitions between the objects as well.

I first tried linking the pictures (objects) on track one and put in transitions and then doing a voice over (narrative) for each individually hoping the audio would link together on the same track and it did. However, there was a big problem on playback. The narratives were cut off at the start ( about a good 20 to 30 seconds) and would start mid-sentence. No way to fix that without hiring a crew as far as I am concerned.

So instead I decided (probably wrong) to do them all as individual projects. Now before I attempt to try to link them to make one project, I have some real concerns:

What is the simplest and best way to do this? Will I run into major issues such as audio being cut, etc? I left a little extra length at the end of each as I could not get it exact straight away. I may be able to trim if needed (close enough for government work), I care nothing about perfection.

I don't want to attempt this until I am clear on it otherwise I would have to start all over again. I don't even know how the hell I got the thing running today, I wish I had someone taking notes because it is hard to stop and notate when deeply involved in brain surgery (video editing in MS, which is the same thing to me), I can't let anything slip out of my hands at that point.

Thank you for all your help. I know it is rough with someone who is absolutely clueless against all you lot with decades of career experience and whatnot, but today I may have finally turned a corner.......actually, I really can't be sure about that, but we'll see.

Hi

That is good news, however

. . . . (probably wrong) to do them all as individual projects . . . .

not necessarily wrong however it just complicates matters for the next stage which would involve mutiple loading, copy and paste and then removal of a timeline ready for the next project.

A less problematic option is to export each of the individual porjects to a Magix Video file (MXV) format, and load these into a new project. Trimming where necessery adding transitions, etc and then export to MP4 for upload to Youtube.

John, I'm not at my editing computer but I am pretty sure you can join projects easily: just open the projects in order (choosing the appropriate option) and they will append to the project that is already opened. No need to copy objects.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

I saved them all as projects. I'm thinking would they not just show in the content screen on the right hand side? Then I could just load them in order and they somehow would attach to each other? I would want to make sure that happens.

That is confusing, my audio is not separate and never will be. I'm trying to do projects. I thought "projects" have everything one puts in them. I don't see my tracks saved separately. That would be super hard too.

One step forward and five steps back again?

You must be referring to the File, Manage project, Merge Movies option which does append to the current movie.

AFAICS this only appends MVD files not MVP.

Hi Eric,

Please, you do not save tracks. Audio files are not considered as tracks in a video program. You record to an audio file that goes on a track. I told you this. You can have many audio files on a track, just as you can have many photos and videos on a track. Use the other thread. Show us what you have done for the audio.

Did you watch my second video in the other thread?

John CB

I'm completely confused with this. Modern English is not my strong suit. English is my first language, but far different from what is spoken in the USA today. Many people have trouble understanding me with the English I speak even if I have lost my accent.

First, I am wrong to call them videos, they should be called objects or projects if more than one object. The manual and everyone else refers to such things as projects. Drilling down when editing there are "Tracks" that objects get put in.

I only mentioned the word "audio" as a descriptive of part of the projects I did, is the word "audio" considered a curse word or something?

I need a whole separate course in the jargon to understand any of this and even that will likely make things worse because the definition of the same words keeps changing every 10 minutes.

I'll look for your second video, which I may have watched at least three times, but don't recall.

Is there a language tutorial for MS?

@browj2 Hi, you say 'open', how did you do that?, the only way I could add another MVP project to an existing was letting MMS create a new movie (it says Project in the pop-up) then merging them to create one.

Ok, I watched the video here as well. Am I correct in understanding the following?:

I have a few short projects, all under one minute, except for two which are about 2 minutes maybe that I want as a single project to later be saved as an MP4 as well (I'm keeping the "project" files as well, just in case).

I open the first one I want and then open the next one and select "yes" to create another movie and keep doing that until all the little projects are loaded? After that, I can go and put in the transitions between each and save it as a project I will rename to notate that it is final, Then I can either delete all the other little projects I used or store them someplace else (external drive or whatever) so things don't get super messy real fast. (They already are with the ones I did ).

Would this might be easier for me to do in "Storyboard" mode instead of "timeline"? I can see where to put transitions easier in Storyboard mode, than in Timeline.

As a side note: I also notice there seems to be no "Finalize" button in MS like there is in Video Easy. One just saves and that's it. Interesting, that kind of works out though because that way one will not forget to finalize, which I will be the first to forget.

My concern is that I think I only get one shot at this and if I mess it up I have to do all the "projects" all over again, which is a lot of work, not to mention sweating, fits of paranoia, anxiety, high blood pressure, possible panic attacks. I was told that this is supposed to be for fun, which is how I approached it, but that has not worked out at all.

  • Movies are individual 'projects' within the main project, these show at the top of the timeline, most of the time you'll just see one. I think @browj2 however helpful complicates his tutorials by adding movies. It's rare in the 20yrs I've been using MMS that I've created another movie.
  • A track is the line you put your video & audio on, (you've been reducing them to 4)
  • Objects are the things you put on the tracks like videos, images, pictures, audio. call them what you like, the terms change with every different editor.

Ah, so I have it somewhat correct then. I look at movies and projects as the same "whole thing" though. It may help if I did not do that. It seems the rest of it I understand at least basically.

@Eric-Elliott Yes sort of, It is helpful if you use the correct terms tho in certain circumstances, I have had to decipher some of the things you wrote.

A project is the one that you open to get you started New Project & the thing you save. - Save Project.

-----------------------------------------------

Movies are what you see at the top of the timeline, like i say most of the time you'll only see one,

(For what were are discussing above it adds another like in my video above)

These can be exported separately, it's hard to explain. If you click on one so it shows it's contents, tracks, objects etc. then go to File - Export that is the movie that will get exported, If you click on another movie at the top of the timeline & go to File - Export it will export that one. That is why it says Export Movie not Export Project.

-----------------------------------------

Tracks are the things you put the video audio etc on

& the things you put on the tracks, Objects, call them what you like as long as the description is correct, ie, video, images, pictures, audio..

@Gid

Hi,

you say 'open', how did you do that?,

With one project open, top menu, File, Open. I just tried one and it loaded 4 movies into my already opened project.

Ok, I still do not understand what a movie is. Which one, Project or Movie, would I export/save as an MPG4 for later posting/uploading?

Should I have saved my little "Projects" as "Movies" instead? Is "Save" and "Export" the same when storing it on my computer? Would movies have my narration?

I think I may have blown it, because things were working finally on Sunday, I was even able to default the "narration" to track#2 (if that is correct) and I just made the pictures (Objects) long and then when I finished narration, I shortened only the pictures.

I'm not yet working with video objects, that is coming when I move to my vinyl collection and I would hope it will be easier to just do live takes with the camera, everything will be there and then all I need to do is load it into MS and attach the logo or something in front and call it done. We will talk about that later though as I am sure it is yet another language and procedure.

@browj2 Ah I see what you mean.,

If opening an MVP file containing more than one movie into another project, all Movies will be imported.

It's the naming 'Project' vs 'Movie', .Yes if a project with multiple movies is saved it opens with the movies it contained orig.

What we're discussing is adding new projects to one movie without having to create a new movie & then merge them, ie. one project with one movie then add a new project directly into that one movie, drag n drop type thing.

PS, I think this comment maybe confused me or made me assume that they were discussing adding all to just one movie. not adding multiple movies to one project 🤷‍♂️

@johnebaker

Hi Al

You must be referring to the File, Manage project, Merge Movies option which does append to the current movie.

AFAICS this only appends MVD files not MVP.

@johnebaker

John, no, open one project, then open another. You'll be asked to close the open one. Answer no, the new project will be added on to the end of the open project. IIRC! 😉 If I get time, I'll set up a couple of dummy projects to confirm.

I'm now frightened of trying to do what I need to do, because this information is super confusing. One wrong move and it's game over. All I wanted to do is put a number of my little short videos, projects, movies or whatever they are called (I'm not sure what anything is at this point) into one video, movie or whatever to save it for later posting.

It sounds like I did it all wrong by making the little whatever they are. I found it much easier to make separate smaller "whatever they are", but that seems to have been the wrong move. I can't make epic movies or photos with narration, they must be smaller so I can work with them. I don't know what to do now.

So I thought I made progress yesterday finally, but I was wrong. I am only working backwards. I'm about ready to walk away from this whole YT idea. Only certain people can do YT, basically almost everyone but me.
It did not look that complicated on paper, but so far after over 2 months I know less now than when I started.
I can build rockets and per form brain surgery, no sweat, but this, this is impossible.

@Eric-Elliott

Hi

As you can see from the comments on merging the individual projects there are several different ways to do this.

. . . . One wrong move and it's game over . . . .

Whichever way you choose to merge the individual projects it is definitely not game over, providing you follow a strict routine for the merge and recovery, if something goes wong is relatively straight forward.

In principal the steps are:

Start with a new, empty project

  1. add the first of the individual saved projects
  2. add the next project
  3. merge the movies
  4. save the project adding a version number to the name
  5. repeat steps 2 - 4 until all individual projects are added

If you cannot do all the import and merges in a single session, at the next session open the last saved merge project and proceed from step 2 again.

If anything goes wrong revert back the the previous saved project and start from that point again.

The exact sequence to use depends on which method you use.
