Latest MEP 2016 update over-wrote my folders.

terrypin wrote on 1/14/2017, 12:45 PM

I've just installed the latest update to MEP 2016 Premium. Dismayed to find that it seems to have over-written all my carefully personalised folders. So scores of collages, effects, etc that I had tediously copied across from MEP 2014 some nonths ago (which had similarly inherited from previous versions) have disappeared. 😠

Hi Terry,

Where were these folders? If under C:\ProgramData\MAGIX....., then that is to be expected, unfortunately. Did it also wipe out anything that is supposed to be remain like any effects, title templates, transitions that you may have done in 2016? Do you have a backup of the C drive?

I am going to make a second backup just in case. I have a second backup of all of my files that are under C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common because I never know what may happen there when I remove a program. I'm afraid of losing Soundpools and other downloads from Catooh that I keep there.

Hope you find everything in a backup. Good luck!

Hi John,

Yes, that's the parent folder. Most of my personalised files are in subfolders like \Video effects, \User effects, and a few others. (I didn't expect a patch to do that. But now that I think about it more thoroughly it I suppose there's no logical reason why such files shouldn't benefit from an update, as well as executable code.)

I've just copied last night's backup of those subfolders to a safe place, before tonight's backup overwrites them, and will restore tomorrow carefully. Any idea what sort of stuff has changed there?

Hi Terry

Is'nt that what the "Transfer Program information" checkbox in the Update on line window is supposed to prevent? Never been sure myself.

Yes and also transfer the current registration status of the program, I was caught out by this a couple of times and had to re-register the program.

Peter, John: Thanks both. Never spotted that.

Q1: For future reference, at what point does that option appear please?

Q2: I was puzzled at having to register again but impulsively assumed that would use my previous ideentification data, so I didn't make a note of it! Where is that accessible in case I need it again?

Q3: Short of doing an exhaustive file comparison (e.g. with a directory compare utility) any idea what files (if any?) may have changed please, to narrow my reconstruction work. Meanwhile I'll try the blunt approach of copying the entire \Program data folder across, although that risks
- overwriting any files that have been changed in the updated version
- failing to install any new files

Hi Terry

A1 - when you get the dialog that asks you if you want to update immediately or later when the program is closed - cannot remember the exact words but the check box is there to the left and below the above buttons.

A2 - Not sure what you mean, assuming you the current registration/activation status then AFAIK this is encrypted.

A3 - do not know what the effect will be.

Thanks John, understood. See also the reply I just sent re the ambiguity.

Re the registration, there was an accompanying note, something like 'make a note of this as you may need it...' which I ignored as I assumed I'd done so on the original install and that it wouldn't change. Does it?

Hi Terry,

Here is a screen shot of the Transfer program information box. You can open it to read the file contents. I looked, my eyes glazed over and I updated.

Hi

@ John CB

How strange - I updated both VPX 8 and MEP 2016 and 2017 before responding to Terry's question to check if there was an issue with the latest updates.

In all three updates, the dialog you have shown had an extra button for Update later . . . whether this was because I had a project open I do not know!!

Hi John CB,

Thanks, I should have been more patient. I missed both the Transfer and More options. Now I'll have to compare ProgramData (latest update) with ProgramData (my weekly backup - too late for my nightly) in order to see what's changed. Unless there's a chance that your browser history still holds the page?

It's not the pressing issue it seemed when I mistakenly thought it was MEP 2016, as I'm not yet ready to switch to 2017 and not yet transferred my stuff across.

Any thoughts on that puzzling ambiguity in my parallel thread?

Terry
