Laptop sound card. what to buy?

muffh wrote on 7/5/2013, 5:42 AM

this is almost an extension of my last question about exporting DD 5.1 sound to disk.

i´m looking for new hardware, but the problem is to find detailed info about the soundcard on different laptops that i considered. It can look like this e.g an HP ultrabook, "Beats Audio" or "Advanced souround sound". I´ve tried to look for an explanation of what sound format that specifik hardware supports, but i get a little mixedup.

can anyone tip me about what to look for when i buy a new laptop ..especially on the soundcard issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Ulf.

I need to first say that I don't work with multichannel sound and I don't edit video on a laptop!!

However, if I was considering going the 5.1 or even 7.1, or whatever, route I would look seriously at using an external soundcard/sound module, especially with a laptop.  For two main reasons: the quality of the audio output from most laptop internal soundcards is pretty abysmal, especially if you want anything like decent quality audio; an external card, most likely connected to your computer by USB, will offer much higher quality.

Thanks Jeff.

Very good to know.

I´ve looked at that option (with External sound module), but i became a little suspicius. But now i´ll think i go with that.

I understand that a Desktop with lots of power is the best alternative. But since i tried to edit on my 3 year old HP DV7 laptop and it worked (ofcourse with a lot of patients and runing the computer at night). I´ll think i try to get around with a new laptop with more powerfull hardware e.g. CPU, GPU and more RAM and an ext. soundcard.

The focus on sound is because i record our live sessions with my band.
