issues with this program

Stefan-Trngren wrote on 12/25/2023, 9:06 PM

Hello.

I wrote this to Magix support.

"Hello. I have been having on and off issues with playing VHS tapes for a while now.

Sometimes they play fine, blue screen as default and then it plays the content fine, and when it does it will do that for weeks without any problem, but then all of a sudden issues arise, the video is freezing and I get blue and green all over the video, see screenshot, and a black screen once I stop the video.

When that happens it sometimes goes back to normal if I unplug the magix cord from my computer and put it back in as well as closing the Magix program and restarts it, but most of the time this is only a shortsighted solution.

I have MAGIX Video Easy Rescue Your Videotapes! Version 6.0.1.10 (UDP3)

Do you have a solution for this?"

They came back with:

"Thank you for your message.

I am afraid that program version is already out dated.

Feel free to check the 2023 version:

MAGIX Rescue Your Videotapes! – Video to DVD

Please pay attention also to the technical requirements:
Video Saver! – Specifications (magix.com)

I hope this helps and I wish you a lovely day.

Best regards,"

I don't really feel like buying a new version unless absolutely needed. Does anyone here have a solution to this issue that doesn't require buying a new version.

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

Did you try ticking the box for older or low performance computers? If you did and that did not work then you could try right clicking the icon and use Windows trouble shooting to try using compatibility mode but that may not work either. (In my experience it seldom works).

If this version was originally running on an earlier version of Windows, i.e. before Windows 10, then the chances are it will not work correctly if you are on Windows 10 or 11, even on a newer machine. It could be for several reasons.

The dongles drivers may not be able to be updated.

Direct X has effectively been rewritten and the coding of the program may not be able to use it. Especially if you were running it under a 32 bit operating system.

There may be problems with the program accessing memory correctly.

The only solution I can think of is to use the operating system that it was designed for but that may make the computer unsafe to surf the net on if in fact it could then connect to the internet as those protocols have also changed in the last few years. Earlier versions of Windows may not run well on a newer machine.

If Magix has told you it is no longer viable I would assume they are correct and not just trying to sell you a new version.

Ray.

I can check when I get home, but I am fairly sure I use the same computer and windows version since I bought this software.

Hi.

If that's the case then try cleaning all your electrical connectors from the recording source to the computer. It could be a weak signal caused by an oxidised connector or a failing cable or electronic component in the dongle. Also check if using something that used magnetic tape that you clean the heads regularly as old tape dries out and sheds oxide regularly. Any build up of oxide on tape heads will degrade the signal. As it is a helical scan head it could be responsible for the pattern I'm seeing in your images. Neat isopropyl alcohol with a lint free applicator like felt or sponge is desirable, some sealed medical wipes would work or cotton buds at a pinch but be careful.

@Stefan-Trngren The green picture artefacts don't look like analog video errors. If there is a weak signal on a video cassette due to demagnetized tape or dirty playback mechanisms or corroded connections the tape would show static noise. This looks like there is some problem with the grabber. Maybe you simply need to replace it with a new one, made for Windows 10/11. If the software otherwise still works fine, you can get grabbers on Amazon.
