Is Vista bad for Video Pro X4?

I am now using Vista 64bit OS after my XP 32bit was not using my full 8gb ram for Pro X4 and HD was struggling. However, now it appears that low red SD footage is struggling?? I am running i5 3.4ghz Program on internal hard drive 1 Files and footage on 2TB internal hard drive 2 nvidia Geforce GT220 graphics card 8gb ram ...basically, as soon as I alter anything as basic as sharpen the image or contrast/brightness the low red footage starts to freeze up and be choppy? The Vista 64bit has service pack 2 installed. I don't know if this has any relevance but this is not right . I have used Movie edit 2005 on XP before and operates far better than this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks Martin

Hi Martin

While Vista is not as good as Windows 7, I do not think you should be having these problems with low res SD video.

I suspect you have something else running on that computer that is taking up a lot of resources eg certain antivirus progams, a virus, some malware.

Which AntiVirus program are you using?

Using Task Manager can you see any tasks or processes that are taking up processor time ?

Hi John,

I have looked at Task Manager and nothing else is showing but Video X pro.

I am using Virgin Media anit virus, I must admit it does do some odd things. However, I have run rigistry, malware, anit virus scans and cleaned up but with no difference. Alos, I have switched off Virgin Media anit virus but Video X Pro stills struggles with this?? Confused????

Hi Martin

Did you check the Processes tab as shown in the image?

Make sure you have the Show processes from all users checked and order by CPU as shown so the highest users are at the top?

Also what does the performance tab show for CPU usage?

Ok, I've had a look at this. To be honest theres a few I'm not sure relate to what....but, none of them appear to be that demanding or using up any CPU whatsoever. In fact, it showed the CPU idle for around 90% of the time???With regards to my Vista installation, I do notice even when Video Pro X isn't running that sometimes my mouse is lagging, so it leads me to thinking there's something not right..

I'm going to experiment with changing my anti virus program to Norton from Virgin Media to see if there's any change. Apart from this I'm stuck.

Oh one other thing......I was monitoring the CPU performance whilst running Video Pro X4 and a few effects and the CPU was up to around 90%....is this normal for an i5 quad core processor?? It seems an awful lot that tthis program demands just for some basic footage??

I have just run the same footage with some effects in Cyberlink Powerdirector, played it in full screen mode with no problems. If I do this in Video Pro X4 it is awful. Pro x4 is the problem,,,,,but why? This isn't good enough.

Thanks for the information.

This is my Intel Q8300 @ 2.4Ghz + 4Gb RAM Win 7 64bit + NVidia GT-630 2Gb memory performance when VPX is playing back with 1920*1080 AVCHD (mts) video on the timeline.

As you can see average peak value is around 75% - the biggest peak is when the preview hit a crossfade between clips.

I would not recommend trying a resource hogging antivirus as you suggested - this will probably make things worse.

I use Avast A/V which is very 'lightweight' (however very effective) compared to the likes of Norton and McAfee. I do not need all the extra bells and whistles (which take up a lot of resources) that they offer - Avast covers all the essentials and it is free for personal use.

Do you have Harware acceleration turned on in te program settings? If so try turning it off - you may find the processer is quicker at rendering transitions etc than the graphics card.

I have the GT-630 with 2Gb memory and notice very little difference with HWA turned on or off.
