Hi

. . . . dell and they said i cant use magix on this computer . . .

That may be true if the Dell does not have standard audio input/output jacks ie red, green and blue as a minimum.

If it has only one audio input then you will have a serious problem with overloading the input which is meant for a microphone.

Without more information in particular the specific Inspiron model and specification it is difficult to be more specific.

AFAICS ACL, you do not say which version, does not record from a USB input which would have been ideal.

John I think you just solved my issue...my turntable is a USB so I've got to get a non USB turntable..

Thanks

Hi

I can't seem to find a turntable that isn't a USB turntable..is there anything I can do?can I add something to the "mix"

That will allow me to use a USB turntable?

Hi

The specification for the Audio technica at-lp60-usb says it has a preamp out with two settings-

Pre-amp “PHONO”: 2.5 mV nominal at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec
Pre-amp “LINE”: 150 mV nominal at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec

you may need the correct cable to connect it to the Line in of your PC and select Line for the preamp see page 5 of the manual.

AFAICS = As Far As I Can See

ACL = Audio Cleaning Lab

Hi,

I have ACL2013, v. 19.0.1.12. Lenny, go to Help, About and you will see this at the top of the About screen.

I connected my USB interface - M-Audio M-Track and it shows up in the ACL record settings. I was able to record with it, so a USB connection for the phonograph should work. I did have to install the ASIO driver for the M-Track, but ACL does not mention using the ASIO driver in the parameters.

Did the USB phonograph come with any installation programs/drivers? If so, did you install it?

With the phonograph connected, on the record parameter screen (first image below), click on Audio input and check to see if the phonograph is listed. It may be the name or something else. If there, select it. See the other two images. Then do ok to return to the record parameter screen. Check towards the bottom under audio input. You phonograph or USB input should be there. If not, open the pop-down and select it. Then try recording.

Let us know if this works.

lenny

ps can you give me a step by step account about how to use the denoissier(the more complicated version where it asks for a noise sample)

browj2 wrote on 4/27/2014, 5:17 PM

Hi Lenny,

It would have helped if you had told us how you had connected your turntable. We would have told you right away that you can or should only connect it one way at a time, not USB and line in both at once.

As for the DeNoiser, you have asked a good question. I have only used it a few times, but not extensively. I read through the manual and it requires actually trying out various things and learning as you go. I suggest that you take a sample recording, note what you don't like about the background noise, and then try out the various parameters. Use this file for testing and learning. Take notes about what works.

For the noise sampling, follow along on the image below. Since we will use the sample, some of the presets are irrelevant. The sample is the hum that you want to reduce.

  1. Place the playback marker at a point in the object where there is undesirable noise and nothing else. If you can locate a hum or a hiss at the beginning or near the end, that would be best.
  2. Make sure that the tool button at the very left is on.
  3. Click on the PICK button. A noise sample spectrum will appear in the window. Note that the switch is in the position shown. Note also that the first box under NOISE SAMPLE will change to Noiseprint (FX).
  4. Click on the arrow button to the right of PICK to hear the sample. If you hear music or voices, you should choose a different location. You want a sample of just the constant noise that you want to remove or reduce. I chose a location where there is a lot of background hum, but nothing else.
  5. Audio type - you could have selected something from the list, but it is irrelevant, AFAICS. Same with PRESET. This is for selecting a sound from the Magix saved samples. They will be ignored when you PICK a sample.
  6. Under processing, click on ANTI-HUM to make sure that it is on.
  7. At the bottom right side, make sure that MAX DAMP TONAL NOISE and DERUMBLE are off for now.
  8. Note the NOISE LEVEL and REDUCTION knobs and the information in the box below them.
  9. Try reducing and increasing the noise level and listening to the result. You probably will not notice much.
  10. Set the Noise level at about 50% and then set Reduction to 3.0 -db. Listen to the result.
  11. Increase Reduction to 6, listen, then 9, listen, then 12, listen. Notice that the hum disappears as you turn the know clockwise. However, the sound may suffer.
  12. Click on the arrow button REMOVED NOISE then play (spacebar) and listen. You will hear what is going to be removed, which should be the hum. Try different settings with the REDUCTION knob.
  13. Unclick the REMOVED NOISE button.
  14. Move the playback cursor to where there is some normal sound and do the same steps, each time listening to the results. As you turn the knob, the hum will decrease, but the sound may become distorted or tinny, sounding like it is coming from a tin can or something.
  15. With the playback cursor still where there is sound (music or vocals), click on the arrow button REMOVED NOISE again then play (spacebar) and listen. You will hear what is going to be removed, which should be the hum but you will probably hear more. Turn the NOISE LEVEL knob counter-clockwise to reduce the noise level and listen to what will be removed. Try different settings with both the NOISE LEVEL and the REDUCTION knobs. You want to find the noise level point where (as per the manual) the value is not too low resulting in insufficient noise dampening which causes artefacts like twittering, and not too high which would produce dull results or useful signals that sound similar to hissing noises that would also be filtered away.
  16. REDUCTION - remember that turning the knob clockwise is actually reducing the interference signal. Do this in 3 db steps until you find the right balance. The further you go, the worse your recording may sound, but the hum will be reduced or eliminated.
  17. Unclick the REMOVED NOISE button and play again to hear the result. Play with the knobs again and listen to the results.
  18. Go back and forth between listening to the REMOVED NOISE and with the button off (normal). Make sure that the REMOVED NOISE button is off before you select OK.
  19. Make sure that ANTI HUM is still selected. If it changed at some point to ANTI NOISE, go back and redo the exercise.
  20. Turn on MAX DAMP TONAL NOISE. This will remove all sounds of the kind selected with PICK. The reduction knob will affect all possible existing noise components simultaneously. I did not hear any difference, but my sample recording was voice and not very long.
  21. Another feature is LENGTH. This is set to auto by default, but you can change it by clicking on AUTO which will turn it off. Then your can indicate a value in milliseconds. I believe that the default is 250ms. This regulates the length of the sample noise taken with PICK. So if your sample gets more than just the hum, you may want to decrease the length. If possible, increase it to get a better sample. Remember, the sample is the hum that you want to reduce.
  22. Finally, turn off the button at the very left to listen to the original recording. Then turn it on and listen again. Notice the difference?

I have not covered the Wizard. Take a look at what it does to help find a sample of the noise that you want to remove.

I did not cover the ANTI NOISE, only ANTI HUM.

Remember, your ears are the judge.
