Inserting an object in the timeline

jcvideo wrote on 10/15/2012, 3:53 PM

In Time-line mode: I have 2 photos on the time line track 1 and a 3rd photo object on track 2. How can I move photo 3 inbetween 1 and 2 without having to move #2 to the right, move 3 inbetween 1 and 2, and then closing the gaps again?

I tryed all {x} options, but none seems to be able to do this basic object movement. It only overlaps 1 and 2 (x-fade) but doesn't shift object 2 to the right making space for the inserted photo 3. Any ideas?

Yes, I know you can do this in Scene Overview mode. It's a pain having to swap back and forward between these 2 modes. There are tons and tons of features in MEP, great, but why is this basic object movement handling not possible in Time-Line mode?

Hi,

Doing this in the scene mode is actually faster and easier than doing it in timeline mode.  Timeline is just what it says, timeline.  If you want to change the timeline and put something in between two objects, you need to move the object(s) to fit the new one in, pretty simple and straight foreward.  Why would you expect something else?

Hi

I think this is what you are referring to in timeline mode -  if you do the following:

1.  Delete image 3 from track 2

2.  Position the timeline cursor at the junction of images 1 and 2

3.  Change the mouse mode to Single track ripple as shown in the image below

4.  In the import pane double click  image3 to add it to the timeline or drag on top of image 2

Image is inserted at the timeline cursor and all those to the right move over to make space for it.

Hi George,

That's OK if the object to be inserted is in the Media pane or an external folder. But in jcvideo's case it's in track 2, so doesn't show up in Scene or Storyboard views.

I suppose as a first step you could move Photo 3 into some available place on track 1 and then use Scene or Storyboard. But that woud take at least as long as the 'making space' method. Actually that's the one I've always used so far, as it is at least intuitive IMO.

I asked a similar question a week ago in the thread:
http://www.magix.info/uk/how-to-find-the-source-of-an-object-in.knowledge.858549.html
which Peter answered.

IMO this is a weakness in MEP's editing features. It could be much easier. For instance, I'd like to be able to simply hold down a hotkey, say Ctrl + Alt, while I drag Photo 3 onto the junction between Photo 1 and 2, and have it inserted automatically. The appropriate shift rightwards of the other tracks would depend on whether Single Track Ripple (Alt + 1) or Multiple Track Ripple (Alt + 2) was currently in use. I find the current need to consider the combinations of both mouse mode features quite confusing personally.

Hi John,

As you probably saw from my recent similar question, raised in this thread
http://www.magix.info/uk/how-to-find-the-source-of-an-object-in.knowledge.858549.html
this is a subject that interests me too.

Your method works fine and I know of no better (although I'll have to see if it replaces the habitual 'making space' approach I've used till now). But it's still pretty slow IMO.

(Or of course use the Import pane; I prefer dragging from a folder as shown.)

As I described in my reply to George, I think this a weak spot in MEP's editing functionality.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies and answers. It doesn't seems to be easy to do a basic object swap movement.

I have experience with other video editing programs, including the simple, limited, but good working cersion of Windows MovieMaker v6. As I said, it is limited, but at least the basic object move functions work as you would expect; just click, drag and drop; no hassles. From a very advanced vidoe editing program, called Movie Edit "Pro" you should be able to expect professional  features. And yes, there are tons of professional features in Movie Edit Pro, but seems to be lacking basic functionality.

OK, I suppose it could make sense going back to Scene mode. However, when I have e.g. all fade-overlapping objects, after inserting a new object, the new object is not automaticly overlapping the following object. Is this a setting?

Also, when creating an overlapping transition, how can I define the overlap time (in seconds)?

Thanks

John
