In Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus, why is there no sound when previewing or importing a large AVI file (1080p 16:9), but sound is audible in other programs when I watch it?

The problem is that I have a 20GB 10 minute video clip I recorded in 1080p widescreen format and for some reason I can see the video in the preview box or video viewer however I cannot hear any sound. It only shows one object in the editor when I import it, so there is no seperate audio track. I have tried all of the settings, checked my computers volume and mixer controls to make sure it wasn't muted, updated my drivers, watched it in another program (and it plays sound with the video!), and for some reason when I preview it in Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus Version 10.0.11.0 (UC1) or import or copy the file to the arranger I hear nothing. Someone please answer this question as soon as possible. I have a lot of nice hardware so I don't believe that is the reason and I am dying to change the format and size of this video clip and I can't.

- Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus Version 10.0.11.0 (UC1)

- AMD Phenom II x4 Black Edition 3.4 Ghz quad core processor w/ stock heatsink and fan

- AMD Radeon HD 6970 Graphics Card

- Cooler Master HAF 922 case

- ASUS Widescreen 21.5 inch monitor (1080p compatible)

- ASUS Crosshair IV Formula Motherboard

- Windows 7 Ultimate (Operating System)

- Logitech X-540 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer

- VIA High Definition Audio (Built in to motherboard)

- OCZ ZX Series 1250W Power Supply

- HP OfficeJet 6500A All-in-one Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier

- Dynex USB Mouse

- Older PS/2 Keyboard

- Surge Protector Power Strip

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm pretty sure that's all of it.

Hi

You have not told us some important bits of information ie what the video format etc is!

What is the source and format of the video?

Use GSpot to analyze the video and come back with the video codec and audio information you get from GSpot.

Check your program settings on the Video/Audio tab to see if the Extract Sound from video option is checked - if it is not then check it and try re-importing again

Unfortunately, the extract sound from video was already checked when I looked so that probably isn't it and the GSPOT software you suggested is only compatible with vista it says, it doesn't say 7. I also don't want to download any programs that I have never heard of if I can help it since that is usually how your computer gets messed up. The original source of the video was a 10 minute clip from a computer game that came out in September of 2011 that I recorded with software made for recording video games and benchmarking them. The video has perfect quality, it's just huge in the filesize department.

Hi

GSpot is a self contained executable - it installs nothing on your computer and works with Windows 7.  Extract the file from the zip file and place it anywhere you like on your hard drive so you can run it.

You still need to find out what is in the video file and the formats of the video and audio - avi is not a file format in itself - it is a container file which can have any video/audio codecs within it.

Alright, here is the data.

Hi

The image is not very clear, however if you look at the audio pane middle left you will see that it is red and says 'Codec is not installed' - this means you do not have the audio codec required for the video file so MEP cannot import the audio.

From what I can see in the image you are using FRAPS to capture the video, this software uses its own codecs for video and audio, see here.

According to the article the audio can be played if you have ffdshow codecs installed.  IIRC MEP can use ffdshow codecs so should be able to import the audio once they are installed.

HTH
