In MEP2016 can you create media bins?

gordon3 wrote on 9/25/2015, 12:13 PM

I'm evaluating the programme.

Every NLE I've ever used allows the user to select files from their hard disc and place them in a media bin or bins so that they are all together for editing purposes. The files themselves are not moved just virtual copies. MEP seems only to allow searching the actual HD file structure so one is constantly switching between folders. Have I got this right?

Moving everything before commecning editing is impractical if I have stills, graphics, CAM1 footage, CAM 2 footage etc neatly arranged in different folders.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi,

As far as I know, no. They had a method using the database created by Photo Manager in which one could drop files into a virtual folder and then open it in MEP. It was in MEP2014 but disappear from 2015 and 2016 (probably because I was the only one who wanted to use it and it couldn't handle .mts files - at least that"s my argument).

In any event, you have to go through and select photos and videos from all over anyways. You can create a link to the folders in the Media pool and give them a name, to be able to go back to them quickly from the media pool. Once done, delete the links - not the folders. Also, you can have everything that you bring into a project copied to a backup folder.

Maybe someone else has found a better way.

Hi

. . . . Maybe someone else has found a better way. . . . .

I don't know about a better way but this is how I organize my projects, media and resources - hopefully the images are self explanatory:-

As shown below I have a master projects folder, on the 'working hard drive', which contains the individual projects.

Each self contained individual project has the following folder structure

There is also a 'Blank project' folder (not shown), which contains the set of folders above, which I copy and paste, rename and the import all my video, images, audio for that project before starting to work on it.

In addition to the project folders I have a common resources folder as shown below

My backups of the above are done using SyncBack to external hard drives as required maintaining the relative folder structures - this aids reopening old projects when I have to copy them back to my working hard drive.

Thanks both for your answers. I'm disappointed that this function is absent but it can be worked around so not a deal breaker and I'll continue evaluating so probably more questions for you!

Thanks again.

I strongly recommend Plus or Premium, not the basic, as you will quickly run into limitations. Check the specs and tutorials carefully on the Magix.com site.
