OK, Jeff, thanks. I'll look into doing that. Many of them were triggered by mouse clicks, etc., will that still be possible in Xara designer 11 if they are in the HTML5 video format? Do you have any recommendations for a converter?

I honestly don't know about the triggering by mouse click; my suspicion is that, yes they can be.

As to convertors, I use (and recommend) MovAvi Video Convertor 18 Premium. (Regrettably, it's not free.) It has a range of "web-suitable" output formats available but I don't have any Flash files to test as an input. If you're able to post one somewhere, e.g. Dropbox or similar and provide the link for me to download it, I'll test whether the app will convert it successfully. Please don't attach it to a forum post; unfortunately, the forum software is likely to compress it and so make a valid test impossible.

I suspect there are free convertors you could use but they tend to be bundled with "additional software", aka Potentially Unwanted Programs, which are often detrimental to the user's computer.

A small correction - HTML5 is the current 'html language' standard, which among other things, specifies video formats that should be supported by the browser without the need for extra plugins.

For maximum browser/device compatability is mp4 as suggested by Jeff.

Assuming Web Designer 11 will import mp4 files then on import, I have Web Designer Premium (v15), you will be asked if you want the video to auto start on loading. If you click no then the video will only start when clicked on.

Thanks everyone. I tried 5 different converters and none of them worked very well. These were pretty complex swf files that I had made years ago using Swishmax. They had text flying out, sounds, music, animation effects, etc. I got one program, SWF Decompiler to create an HTML5 verion with it's acompaning sprite.js file, but it apparently is just a flash file embedded in the HTML file as I still have the same problem trying to play them back on a browser.None of the ones I tried could convert any of them to an mp4 or an avi or other formats successfully. It's too bad Flash has become so restricted, it could do so many neat things.

The swf file will not convert to a mp4 file format, I only get an unplayable file with no titling, animation or the second still image.

The issue is that the SWF file is not a video file, it is a vector graphic file with a controlling script (actionscript) to animate it.

AFAICS you have two options:

1. If you have access to Adobe Flash Professional use this to import the SWF file and then export to a suitable video format, eg mpg or avi, and then convert this to mp4.
    
2. Use a video editing program, eg Photostory or Movie Edit Pro, to create a movie from the original images, add the animations and titling and export as a mp4 file.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Well, probably about time to do some new web design elements anyway; maybe not as fancy, but the imagery will be there. Thanks for taking time to try it.
