imported mp4 video plays sound but no video

Mike-Orland wrote on 3/18/2023, 5:11 PM

I just upgraded to MS 2023 Platinum. I imported some mp4 files to the timeline. When I tried to play the files there was no video, only audio. When I tried to press stop the program freezes. I have to end the program through control alt delete. My files play fine in MS 17. I can also play the mp4 files through windows and see the video. What do I need to do to fix this?

Also, when I first installed the program and opened it a message box said there was a patch to version 3172. I kept getting error messages that files were open and it could not update. I had everything closed down and it still would not update. I ended up clicking ignore for one files and it updated to 3172. I don't know if this is causing my above errors.

@Mike-Orland Hi, check that your GPU drivers are up to date,

& there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

@Mike-Orland

Hi

In addition to @Former user comment, no video can result from an incorrect setting within the program, a third party plugin being necessary or a hardware compatibility issue.

What is the computer specification, and Windows version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) your are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature.

My video card is Nvidia GeForce GTX 660TI. I don't know if this is the problem. I am able to create a movie file using Movie Studio 17. Not Movie Studio 2023. I loaded MS 2023 on my other computer with Windows 11 and was able to create the file I wanted. But, I want to create the movies on my Windows 10 machine. It has 64gb ram and I have never had a problem before today when I loaded the new program.

@Mike-Orland

Mike, go into File>Settings>Program...

On the Device Options tab, set the three Hardware Acceleration dropdowns to CPU. Magix won't use older graphics cards (and unfortunately just spits the dummy instead of gracefully backpedalling to a lower configuration, not even providing the user with a explanatory message).

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@Mike-Orland

Hi

The GTX 660 Ti is part of the problem.

If you have a AMD processor then in the Program settings, Device options tab, Import, Processing and Export options set them all to CPU.

If you have an Intel processor and the first digit, after the hyphen in the model number, is 5 or higher and the 3 options mentioned above off the option of using the integrated GPU, try setting the options to this. If that does not work then set the 3 options to CPU.

Note without hardware acceleration from a suitable graphics card eg a GTX 1060 or better, or Intel HD 630 or better, the performance of the program may give rise to stutter on playback of the timeline depending on effects used.

If you experience this:

  • Turn on Create proxy files in the project settings - this will create lower resolution versions of the video to reduce load on the processor, though take up more disc space, to give a smoother playback in the program - the original video is used when exporting

  • Ensure the Lightning symbol bottom right of the Preview monitor is turned on (blue).

I changed the settings to CPU and I am now able to see the video. I am running Intel I7-3930, 3.2 GHz. If I get a new video card do you think everything will be okay if I change the setting back to the graphics card? Or is the computer too old. I was able to play the demo file before changing the setting and it worked fine.

Thanks for your help.

@Mike-Orland Hi, glad you got it working, 👍 That CPU is quite old but to be able to say whether your PC is too old you'd need to share full specs, motherboard, type of RAM, as much detail as poss, you could just upgrade the GPU but sometimes it is better just to start afresh with a new PC, It depends on how much money you want to spend & how accessible another GPU is, Could you get hold of a better card & try it out?

Hi

. . . .  If I get a new video card do you think everything will be okay if I change the setting back to the graphics card . . . .

As @Former user has commented your system specs are necessary.

I doubt the motherboard has the correct socket, ie a PCI-Express 3.0 x16, to accept for example the absolute minimum of a GTX 1050, and preferably better, graphics card.

Assuming the Intel processor is the i7-3930K, it has no integrated GPU, and does not support PCI-Express 3.0

Mike, I had a similar issue, with my old machine (which I still use). I bought a 1050 for a giggle, put it in and it didn't work. JohnEB helped me but I suspect it was an incompatibility with the PCIe bus system, so I gave up. I've kept it for my future new machine. That said, if you do decide to get a new computer, the 1050 is old tech so don't buy one in anticipation; get a better one.

You will be able to keep working (nothing has changed, performance-wise, compared to your last version, if it can't use the GPU). If you're using HD clips, just set up to use Proxy files, as JohnEB says above. When you create a new movie, hit E, then tick the "Automatically create proxy files" box.
