I'm using MEP 17. How in blazes can I close one file or project? There is no command for close file or close object. The only way offered is to shut down the whole program, and then start it up again. What am I missing?

Hi

MEP 17 is different from many other Windows programs, however it is not the only program, in that it does not have a Close button.

. . . . The only way offered is to shut down the whole program, and then start it up again. . . . .

To start a new project with an existing one open click File, New project.  Click Ok on the New project dialog that pens if the settings are correct

If you have not saved the current project you will be prompted to do so.
