I have searched every related question and cannot find an answer. Every time i try to open a mp4 file wmv it says make sure drive is not full or write protected. I have done everything its not write protected or my drive is not full. I can open it on other programs and editing software with no problem. I just bought this software today and want to rip my hair out. I really need some help maybe a step by step because i have tried everything that was posted on other similar questions. I have movie edit pro 2016 i bought the codec and went to properties and made sure to allow access. Ive tried changing the name and moving the file around. Any help would be fantastic. Im not super familliar with this type of thing so forgive me.

Hi

. . . . to open a mp4 file wmv . . . .

MP4 and WMV are two different file formats.  If suspect you have a mp4 file with a wmv file extension, or vice versa, then you will get the error message.

Here is an example of the message with an incorrect file extension - the video is actually mp4

The error message will show you what the file extension is as shown above - in this case .wmv has been added to the end of the correct file extension .mp4

If this is not the case post a screen shot of the error message (cropped to just show the message as above) and use MediaInfo to analyse the video clip and post the results from the Tree view.

Hi

Thanks for the MediaInfo data - I suspect MEP cannot open the file  - because it is using a 'prohibited' format profile and codec - isom - and is therefore not standards compliant.

What was the file created with?

Do you have ffmpeg installed on your computer?

. . . . i used this- 'online-convert.com'   to convert for free online . . . .

Do be aware that many online converters retain a copy of your file and make it available for public distribution.  online-convert do this - see section 2,  item 3 here.
