I Can't Load My Saved Project

darby8 wrote on 12/17/2016, 10:21 PM

I'm hoping I'm missing something simple here. I have created a project, saved it many times, and the source material is still in the same location. When I came back to work on it again, the project name shows up at the top, but the story board/timeline view window (bottom third of the screen) is absent. This seems to be a bug. I am using Movie Edit Pro 2016 on WIndows 10. I have installed the latest updates. I have rebooted my computer (Lenovo Z50). The problem persists.

I really hope I do not have to start over again. I'm afraid that if I do start over again, spend all that time again, save it again, it will still be lost again. I need to make sure I didn't do something fundamentally wrong so I do not repeat my mistake.

Try resetting the screens, F9.

Didn't work. Interesting clue: When I click File, Last Opened Disc Projects, this project is not listed. It's as if it never existed. If I start a new project, all windows present themselves. There is something corrupt, I think, with my project. If so, I want to know how it happened so I do not repeat this experience.

Do you see the .mvp (project) file listed wherever you have chosen to save such files to? If so, and you double-click on it, does that successfully open the project in MEP?

If that works, re-save your project IMMEDIATELY with a new name (use Save as>) and then you should be fine to continue working.

If you don't see the mvp file listed or clicking it fails to open the project, I fear that somehow the project file may have become corrupted; this is not always the result of human error, in my opinoin/experience so there may, unfortunately, be nothing you can do to avoid "repeating the experience".

One other thought: assuming you have the autosave function turned on, in the same folder where the project files are stored do you see any file with the suffix .BAKx_MV_, where x is a number from 0 to 9? These are the (up to) 10 most recent autosaves. Can you open/use any one or more of them (check the date/time of when they were created/saved, start with the most recent and then work chronologically backwards until, hopefully, you find one which you can use. Clearly you should expect to have lost some of your most recent work.)

Also, make anew, short project, save it and note where it's saved. Your other project may be saved in the same location. Look with Windows Explorer. Or, do a search of your hard drives for .mvp and you might find the file.

Sometimes the .ini file get corrupted and the only way is to delete it and let MEP create a new one. That's why most of us keep a backup copy once we have set up the program the way we like it.

However, your initial question stated that you don't see the Project window (Timeline /Storyboard area). Maybe you can post a screenshot showing your setup.

I went ahead and started over. I didn't want to risk losing the project again. After I am finished I will go back and see if I can reload it. Thank you to everyone who helped me. At least my wife is happy that I got it done. And so I'm I.

As a second precaution, I normally do incremental saves, that is, Save as, and append r1, then r2, r3, etc. That way, if a project file dies, I have both the backup files and the previous revisions.
