I bought 2020 in May and now I have to pay for the upgrade to 2021?

The version I have is MMM Premium 28.0.3.51 bought in May of 2020. When checking website I noticed a new 2021 version. I figured this was an upgrade which should have been free...however, they want me to buy this at the same price I paid for my original 2020 in May. Is this actually what is happening or am I missing something here?

@Ginny

Hi

The 2021 is a completely new version of Music Maker and requires a new serial number for all the new features to be activated.

In this situation, for users such as yourself, if you upgrade, it uses your 2020 serial number and you only get the features from the 2020 version.

In my experience this can cause some issues with old projects that use Instruments because the VST-Bridge feature, and new features, are not activated and need to be purchased.

It is not clear on whether this is a free upgrade from 2020 if you have a valid subscription - at worst you should have to pay the Upgrade price only which is lower than the first time purchase, however I would suggest either:

  1. you contact Magix Sales through the Support link at the top of the page and ask them.

    or

  2. wait until your Update Service is nearly due to expire and upgrade then.

Thanks so much for your answer. I will contact sales first and ask but I suspect what you are saying is correct, and at this point, I am just in the infant stage of learning the program.

@Ginny

First off, the program is FREE! With Plus or Premium, you are purchasing features and presets and you get credits for instruments and soundpools, but the program itself is the same as the free version. If you purchase the new Premium 2021, you get new features that are available for the new version, and you get more presets and credits for more Soundpools and Instruments. Do not expect Magix to also give you the new version that gives you even more Soundpools and Instruments; you already got them.

There is nothing stopping you from installing the new version (download the free version) and at the same time keeping the old version. Either way, you don't lose anything. That way you can try out the new version to see if all of your existing projects work. Of course, you will need to immediately update to the new patch, log in and download a lot of stuff that will be updated. I went through this process before getting and applying the new Premium activation code. It worked well, except for the bugs, which have now mostly been patched.

Thank you @browj2. That makes sense as well. I just didn't understand the process as I am new to this format (really really new). Most other programs, not necessarily music DAWs will give you any upgrades within a certain period of time, i.e. Winzip, Dragon, and others. But this being a whole new program with additional instruments and soundpools is quite a bargain. Once again, thank you. I love this program...you can take it from newbie to pro and it's so much easier for beginners like me. :)
