I am relatively new to Magix ACLAB MX. I am using a Dell inspiron 530s computer on Vista.

When I try to import from a cassette player, I encounter 2 problems:

1. when I click "Record", I get the error message "Encountered an Improper Argument" which disappears when I click OK. The Recording Input Dialogue box then appears.

2. when I then try to import a cassette track, I get a second error message "The Wave Shape Device 'Microsoft Sound Mapper' cannot import this format. Undefined external error."

Are the two connected and can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong?

Hi

More information on how you are connecting the casette recorder to your PC ie  via the sound card or has the cassette recorder a USB output.

Your computer spec - especially the sound card - is needed.

Also which device are you setting ACL to record from - I suspect this is not set correctly if you have a Realtk sound card.

Thanks for response.

I am connecting the casette player very simply - earhone socket 3.5mm to computer back panel blue socket 3.5mm.

The audio spec for the PC is a Realtek ALC 888 (7.1 Channel Audio).

As far as I can tell I was not getting as far as specifying an actual device from which to record.

The full spec of the 530s is per manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insp530s/en/OM/PDF/om_en.pdf ; Appendix A on Page 177.

Any more info requirment (if I can!) please shout.

Many thanks

Maurice

That is what I thought you were doing - I suspect the stereo mixer is not enabled  - open Control panel, Sounds and set the options shown in this image - you right click in the centre on a blank area to get the popup menu.

When recording select stereo mixer in ACL record settings

Make sure you turn off all Windows sounds

John

It seems to have worked!

My test tracks have imported into a new project (although the "Encountered an Improper Argument" error message still appears on existing projects).

I appreciate the help - I don't think I would have sorted this by myself in a month of sundays!

I am putting together the sound effects track for an amateur production of Calendar Girls, so wish us luck?

Thanks and best wishes
