How to select and then delete part of a sound?

As per title, tried click-dragging on the sound but that just moves it along the timeline, tried on the ruler at the top and that puts a "start" and "end" line, but it hasnt SELECTED. If i then press DEL it deletes the ENTIRE sound. How tf to make a simple selection????

@Crinkle Right click on the object and select "Wave Editing". This will give you the editing style you are looking for. Alternatively you can cut audio objects with the time ruler and a keypress on T (select the object you want to cut or select the tracks you want to cut). Then you need to delete the part you do not want. This workflow is non-destructive and will not change the original audio files.
