How to remove the black bars in a vertical video

Piotr- wrote on 11/18/2022, 12:24 PM

Hi.

I have a short question. How to remove the black bars in a vertical video (for example from a mobile phone) in Magix Movie Studio 2023. Is there any fast option (video effect, tempalte) to adjust the video to 16x9 proportions, to change the black bars into blur bars on the left and right side screen, similar to the edge of the film. In Nero Video, when I use vertical video software, it automatically adjusts to the video's preferences and dipslays video with blur effects.

@Piotr-

Hi.

Not sure what you want.

Are you exporting video that is 16x9 but want it shown in 9x16 or are you using files taken in portrait mode and then want to export to the same format?

If the latter, then simply start your project with the correct ratio of 9 x 16 and save with the same settings.

If something else, please explain further.

Ray.

Hi,

Select the video clip, Templates tab, Design Elements, Image border effects basic - and you have a whole bunch of templates to try out.

@Piotr-

In addition to @CubeAce comment/questions, if you are wanting to put a 9:16 (portrait) aspect ratio video into a 16:9 (landscape) project and have it displayed as 16:9 then you are going to have to do some heavy sectioning of the video to make it fill the screen this can result in a severe loss of image and is not suitable if you wan to see the whole or majority of the image eg

before

after

An alternative quick and easy method, and one I use where any image or video is not tthe same Aspect Ratio as the project (movie) and I need to see the full image, is to duplicate the image/video and set up as shown below.

I have used images for the example, however video would be done in the same way plus one of the 2 clips needs it audio muting.

Thanks for Yours advices.

@browj2

I used to use templates which were recomended by browj2 but each one of them are moving and it is necessary to turn off „size/position/rotation” efect.

@johnebaker

I know too that it is possible to do such effect by jonebaker’s tips.

The both solutions demand additional operations on clips.

In Nero Video, it is very simply. I put movie on storyboard and software automatically adjusts this clips to the video's preferences with blur effect like on foto below. I don’t believe that Magix Movie Studio has not such effect.

@Piotr-

Hi,

Movie Studio automatically adjusts clips to the Project Settings, unless you want otherwise. Applying a collage effect, which is what the background image is, or almost any other effect that is not under Effects, Movie effect settings, is not automatically done. Where would that end?

You can ask Magix to add a new feature to the Movie Effect Settings that would include a selected background effect.

The Image Border Effects are just simple collages. You can make your own and add it at the same location and apply it when you want. There is a tutorial on how to do this.

Alternatively, create and save the image that you want for the background. When you have finished editing (or at any time), import the image at the beginning of the project to a higher numbered empty track. Right-click and set it as background. Extend it the full length of your project.

Or, as above but put the image in the

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\program_name\VideoEffects\BackgroundEffects\Pictures

folder, add an icon if you want. Then when the project is done, or at any time, select the first object on which you want the background, apply the background, ungroup, move the background object to an empty track and drag the end to cover the project. Done.

Greetings @Piotr-

Have you tried moving your edited video to a lower track and copying it back onto to track 1.

Then stretch and blur the copy on track 1 to your satisfaction.

It works for me.

Thanks guys for the tips.
I've been using Magix Movie since "Video Deluxe 12" (it was 2010). Back then, mobile phones did not record videos in HD resolution and higher. Today time is changing and sometimes I need to add video in unnatural format to my project 😁. I think this problem has been solved. Perhaps in the future Movie Studio will have a feature like Nero.

Hi

I too have Nero Video Editor and yes it does work as you have suggested, it is the same effect as those @browj2 pointed you to in MMS 2023 without the animations.

In MMS there is also another option that works- the Background design option available on right click of the portrait video/image where you can select a colour or image to use as the background.

Both @browj2 and @me_again have also suggested the method I proposed earlier with good reason - it is quick and easy to do, and the background matches the image tonal range better.
