How to open audio files side by side

Dolan-Blozvich wrote on 8/5/2021, 4:54 PM

I got the free trial today and I want to open audio files next to each other so I can edit them together like in this image. https://www.videohelp.com/softwareimages/sound_forge_133.jpg
I've tried everything I can think of and googled everything I can think of and found nothing that works. It always just opens the files in separate little windows. I found a forum post for soundforge 12 that said to use the "open files in one project" button or something but the option they showed in their screenshot isn't in the version I'm using apparently, which is 15. The best it lets me do is append other files to the end which is useless.

There are a few ways to do this, drag the desired file to an existing timeline or copy & paste the data . If you just want to add a file after one that is already there, check-mark the box Another option is to launch 'File> Open' and check-mark "Append to current data window" prior to clicking the new file.In the 'Event' mode it can be further dragged around on the timeline like for authoring a CD.
This may differ some in SF Audio Studio and SF Pro which you did not state

btw, welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users forum @Dolan-Blozvich.

Thanks but none of these are working. I'm using the sf pro 15 free trial. If I drag a file into a timeline, all it does is put it right on top of the audio that's already there, instead of on a new track or line or whatever the right way to say it is, like in the image I first posted. The same goes for pasting it. I found the event tool and could drag the clips left and right but still found no way to make more tracks. I figured out how to embed an image so here's what I want:

And here's what I'm getting when I try to drag a new file onto it.

This may be a trial version limitation. Otherwise there has been no reports of bugs or anything else using these methods with any version of SF Pro.

- Adding a subsequent file by dragging: *Open SF with the file you want at the head of the timeline (TL). Confirm Sound Forge is in the 'normal edit' mode. Zoom out on the TL so there is some blank space after tail of the existing file. 'Restore down' the SF window so some of your PC's desktop Window Explorer is visible. Find the desired secondary file and drag it to the blank space at the end of the first file on the SF TL. The Mix/Replace window should open. Set both the 'Source' and 'Destination' faders to 0dB (or whatever is desired).

- Copy/paste a new file: Open the file you wish to add in SF and select the entire TL (Ctrl+A) and Copy (Ctrl+C) Open the file with SF as above*, place the cursor at the end of the TL and select 'Paste' (Ctrl+V)

- Append to TL method: Open the file with SF as above*. Select "File> Open" and check-mark "Append to current data window". Select the file you wish to add and click 'Open'. The file will be placed at the tail of the existing file no matter where the cursor is.

btw, your screen-shots show a multi-channel poly file and one two channel stereo file... why? Try two files with the same number of channels to start with.

You can also clean up SF appearance by hiding the mostly useless "Instant Access" window, the 'Overview' (at the top) as well as some of the level meter types at the right.. but that is a user preference.

rraud, it seems all the methods you described involves appending another stereo file to the end of am existing open stereo file data window.

I too have had difficulty understanding SFP's new "multichannel" editing mode and have yet to figure out how to put 2 separate stereo files so they are coexisting in the same data window on 4 different channels as shown in the image.

If you know how to do that without appending to the the end of an existing data window, I believe that is what they want and I would be grateful as well since I have no idea how to do this and I'm not running the demo version. I just haven't bothered to figure it out in Forge and open the files in Vegas instead.

Hi Red,
Drag (or copy/paste) an additional single or interleaved channel file to the multi-channel timeline in the "Event" tool mode. Drag the file to where you wish in terms of time and channel(s). Then switch back to the normal 'Edit' tool.
