How to find the source of an object in Movie Edit Pro 17

jcvideo wrote on 10/7/2012, 11:25 PM

• How can I find the source location of any used objects?
• How can I insert a object, like a movie or photo, between two existing objects without having to shift the objects to the right far enough to the right in order to create room to insert the new object.
• How can I (e.g. after deleting of an object) shift the objects to the right of the gap to the left in oreder to close the gap without having to fiddle with the overlap/fading time?
• How can I find our what movements or video effects have been applied to an object?

icvideo,

1. RIght click on any object and go to 'Object properties...' at the end of the drop down menu. Included is the full path filename though it may be mid-abreviated with /.../ if the path is too long to fit the window.

2. Check 'Multitrack ripple' in your help file. I don't have MEP17 to check.

3. [Ctrl + Del] will delete and close the gap. This will move things on other tracks as well if there is space. Seems objects on other track won't shift it it causes an overlap with something else etc but you can force an overlap by first grouping the material to the right.

4.Applied effect names should appear in a list along the bottom of an object in the timeline, or do a right click and pick 'Video effects' >> 'Save video effects...' for a more user friendly list with is provided if you don't want to save all the effects.

Regards,

Carl

Hi

1. As Carl has suggested or open Movie Settings (E) and select the second tab and there are paths to all files and effects used in your open movie.

2. Highlight the clip you wish to insert in the Media Pool then place the playmarker where you wish to insert the material then click the Insert Object icon using the appropriate ripple mode from the dropdown or key shortcut (2) or (3).

3. As suggested or:- place the playmarker at the point you wish to trim then use (z) to trim the start of the clip or (u) to trim the end, and automatically close up the gap.

Also if closing the gap manually - make sure the "Snap to" ie Magnet symbol above the timeline is activated to aid docking the clip with the next one.

4.Also: - Open the Effects tab in the media pool and at the bottom left, click the double chevron symbol to reveal the keyframe timeline area. When you click the clip in the timeline all effects and keyframes applied will be displayed.

Best

In MEP 2013 I see that you can do it like this:

BTW, what is that middle icon '{}'?

--------------------

I have an associated question. More frequently I want to copy or move an object already in the timeline. For example, how do I most easily insert Photo 2 between Photo 1 and 3? Same question for inserting from a Windows folder. That's my usual import method, as it avoids switching from Effects (where I spend most time) to Import. Currently I use Alt+2 then drag to get space, make the insertion, then close the gap. Using Ctrl+x (or Ctrl+c) followed by Ctrl+v at the insertion point results in overlap, if I proceed beyond the warning message.

Hi Terry

Yes, even quicker in 2013. The { } symbol loads the clip into the preview monitor for trimming and then dragging to the timeline.

Re: your assoc. question - The method I use is switch to Story board mode then drag and drop to required position. This always performs a multitrack ripple but does not cut and move the lower tracks, like the Insert object - Multitrack Ripple command does in the timeline.

Drag and drop from Win Explorer acts the same way as sending to the playmarker position fom the mediapool (arrow in circle) and what happens to the other objects/tracks depends on which Insert Object button (Key 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) you have selected or select.

Not sure if there is a method of moving in timeline mode without that overlap thing occuring - and I can not see the use in that!

BTW Terry I tried to view your last PM about the HW Acceleration problem, after clicking on the link in the email, but my messages box showed no new messages. Did you get the one I subsequently sent you. Something isn't working so maybe just reply in the original thread.

Cheers

Hi Peter,

Thanks for that, very helpful, I'll try your workaround. But would really like to know why that overlap arises in the timeline. IMO it's a bug!

--------------------

I'm sure we're now in sync with the PMs! Not sure what that last one you mention can have been, because my last to you was the one about my further nVidia troubles. And I have now seen your reply, but only today. That delay was down to me, because I still haven't got the hang of consistently managing replies to anything, whether posts in the Forum, the Q&A or PMs! I once thought that It would be possible to set things up so that I'd get an email, but that never happens.

I decided some days ago to do exactly what you recommended in your last PM, namely re-install 306.23, 'clean'. Seems to be OK now, although I haven't done any more methodical testing. And I still don't know how to display that full-screen, animated tool (complete with 'whooshing' sound) showing performance of my various PC elements. Some hot key combination I've now forgotten.

I have sent this by PM but posting in the thread too as you suggest, in case the PM system has screwed up.
