How to eliminate or reduce compression artifacts

ChayHawk wrote on 10/8/2016, 7:44 PM

I am using movie edit pro 2016 plus, and I am using it to render game footage. I use an Elgato Game capture HD to get the footage, it records it to .mp4 format, and it looks perfect on my pc. However when i render it from  MMEP it looks blocky in some parts where there is movement, when im standing still in the game it looks just like it does on my pc, but movement in some spots causes artifacts. Does anyone know how to get rid of this in MMEP 2016? I'm using the default options for .mp4 export. Or does anyone know of a program that  can remove artifacts?

Thanks

Hi

Looking at the demo video for the Elgato recorded at 1080 and played back from Youtube at 1080 resolution there is significant blockiness exhibited in the video - if this is typical of the unit then the artefacts are there in the captured video..

There are some external tools available for reducing blockiness, however the one I have used (TMPGEnc) tends to make the image very soft/blurred.

Can you analyse a video clip using MediaInfo and post the results from the Tree view - you wil need to use File,  Export to get a text file you can copy and paste the results into your reply?

Which export preset are you selecting?

No, the video looks crystal clear from the capture device, i believe its the file format exported to that caused problems. I exported my video to .wmv format with the highest quality settings and then uploaded to youtube, and noticed very significant improvement.

I will export a portion of the video where it gets blurry in .mp4 format and then use MediaInfo when my video finished rendering.

Which export preset are you selecting?

Hi

. . . .  uploaded to youtube . . . .

Assuming that you are seeing the blockiness in your original video on Youtube and not when playing the mp4 on your PC - then that could be the problem.

YT determines your Internet connection speed and sends the appropriate resolution video which can be as low as 240p this will introduce blockiness and you have no control over it happening.

. . . .I will export a portion of the video where it gets blurry in .mp4 format . . . .

Sorry, did not make it clear that it is the source video information that we need - analysing the exported video will tell us very little, however -.

Which export setting are you selecting?  It gives us much more information for the exported video.

No i see the blockiness on my pc as well, youtube just amplifies it.

I use .mp4 default settings, i dont change anything. I just select .mp4 and export.

Here is the video info, been trying to post it here since yesterday but the site has been giving me trouble so i posted it on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/ZB0PLquC

Hi

Thanks for the MediaInfo of the video file - is this the file exported from MEP or direct from the Elagato?

The mp4 is quite highly compressed  with a low quality factor of 0.096 - I would have expected a figure in the range of 0.150 to 0.200.

. . . . I use .mp4 default settings, i dont change anything. I just select .mp4 and export. . . .

Which of the mp4 export options shown below is in the Preset selection dropdown of the export dialog - the range of options will depend on the codec Intel or MainConcept you are using for export and you may not have both ?

   Intel codec

   MainConcept

Note the above are PAL options - if you are NTSC then the framerates will be different.

If you have User defined in the option box try using the MP4 FullHD 1950x1080 25p (or 30p) option for export.

That is from MEP.

"Which of the mp4 export options shown below is in the Preset selection dropdown of the export dialog"

Mine says "User defined"

"the range of options will depend on the codec Intel or MainConcept you are using for export and you may not have both ?"

I dont see anything in the drop down list sxcept for "Standard" unless i check the "Display all" box.

"...if you are NTSC..."

Yes i am NTSC.

Hi

. . . . Mine says "User defined" . . . .

If you are getting this that means at some point one of the settings has been changed, I suspect you have taken the Standard preset and change the resolution to 1920x1080.

This will reduce the quality of the video and cause the blockiness because the Standard setting has a resolution of 1280*720 and the bitrate is too low for 1920 x 1080 - see images below, your framerate will be 30 fps compared to my 25 fps in the dialog.

MP4 Standard settings

MP4 Full HD settings

Try exporting using the MP4 Full HD 1920x1080 30fps preset
