How to disable pop up advertisements for magix?

hendry wrote on 8/27/2018, 9:44 AM

I upgraded from MEP17 to latest version and now I get pop up advertisements in the lower right corner (system tray area), huge pop ups advertising Magix software (sound maker etc) even when I am not using MEP. The ads just pop up randomly at anytime when I am connected. It is shocking that my paid software is doing this to my computer and really very shady on Magix part! How to disable this? I have lost trust in Magix and shan't be upgrading to any further versions and will be switching to a different program if they keep this shady practice up. At least give us the option to opt in or out or disable the ads!

Hi

Uninstall Magix Network Sync if you are not using it and in Movie Edit Pro Program settings (Y key) , System tab check Hide news.

. . . . this shady practice up . . . .

This is not a shady practice it is becoming a very common feature with software and web sites, with some there is no way at all to disable or opt in.out.

I agree with your comment there should be an opt in/out option.

Thanks, John, that helped. I've done that and no longer get any random large pop ups while I'm working in MS Word or Excel or any other random moments.

I have been seriously considering an upgrade to my MusicMaker app, but I will not be doing so now. I am very disappointed at the invasion of my personal machine with popup ads. It may be common, but that does not justify it. I do not get any other popups: just from Magix. I really like MusicMaker and am very disappointed that will now have to identify an alternative. Thank you for posting the fix. Remember: I paid for MusicMaker. I do not accept advertising from paid apps.

Hengist wrote on 10/2/2018, 10:31 AM

Have to agree. I might choose to upgrade to the latest version - which I am aware of - but might change my mind if the system keeps ignoring me checking the "Do Not Show This Again" box!

Thanks for the fix ... off to do that now. :)

You must uninstall a program named CONNECT. You will not find anything by the name of Magix Network Sync. At least, I did not. But I did find and uninstall CONNECT. In a previous post, I said that I received no popups except from Magix. I also receive them from MalwareBytes, but that software is free. I accept ads from free aps ... not paid aps.

I don't mind if it was a pop up that appeared at program start with latest news or deals which can be turned off like in many programs. I cannot accept that the ads pop up at random times even when I don't have MEP up and running nor have I used it at any time during the day. I can be working on a spreadsheet and the big ad just pops up with no way to turn it off easily. Unacceptable!

I agree that this “hidden” program feels suspicious and sneaky. It kind of gives one a “dirty” feeling about Magix. It certainly appears they purposely tried to hide in by naming it just “Connect” with no sign of a company name or publisher/developer while all the other apps are named “Magix something or other...”

Hi

. . . . they purposely tried to hide in by naming it just “Connect” with no sign of a company name or publisher/developer . . . .

AFAICS the Connect program is clearly identified as a Magix product ie

  • when you hover the mouse over the Connect icon

  • when you open the program

  • and in Apps and features

Interesting. Here I simply had an app called “Connect” without the Magix included. Perhaps I am wrong... If so, then my apologies... I saw another post mention the “hidden” Connect app and saw it here also. It is possible that particular Connect app is from something else such as a printer driver or something.

How to fix: Go to Windows Uninstall/change and find the obvious name clearly relatade to Magix: It is named "Connect" uninstall it and that pop up will (god bless) desappear.

For me, there was only a "Connect" label on the tray. No reference to "Magix". This is really annoying shaddy practice.

I did that like 2 weeks ago, and it seems to come back, I don't know how.

I again uninstalled it. Will see if it comes back again this time round.

Contrary to what Andrey-Santos indicated, Magix Connect shows up as "Magix Connect," not just "Connect." The latter is something else and I don't know what. Instead of uninstalling it, open it, as shown by John EB, and deactivate all of the products for which you don't want to receive information. You can deactivate everything if you want.

Magix Connect is useful for other things, not just providing info on new products and upgrades.

I, too, installed Vegas recently. On the install page, Magix Connect was indicated as one of the choices for installation, checked by default. I expect that is why it was installed; you accepted it.

When you are in MEP, look at the menu listing under the Import tab and you will see "Cloud Import." Click on it. It will go immediately to Magix Connect, Cloud Import tab, and list any cloud storage sites that you have linked to it. You can then open it, like Microsoft One Drive, and select and import any files that you have there. They will be imported to your computer first. One use is if you have shared cloud drives with someone who puts up photos and videos and you want to use them in a MEP project. Simple transfer.

This is one reason why I recommend keeping Magix Connect.

If I may pop in to clarify, a version of MAGIX' "Connect" does show up as ONLY "Connect" in the listed Applications of the Apps And Features section of Windows Settings (where you go to Uninstall/Modify programs). Here is a Screenshot of how it looked:

As can be seen, there are two listings for "Connect" - and upon Uninstalling the "Connect" listed app (and not the "MAGIX Connect" app) - the Windows UAC warning came up, listing it as "MAGIX Software GmbH".

It is likely connected to the Vegas line of video editing applications (formerly of SONY), as their software may not be fully converted (and/or left so on purpose for differentiation).

[I state this as I had both applications (Vegas and MEP) installed on my system, and others have stated their MAGIX-editor-only-installation listing/including "MAGIX Connect" in the Apps list]

*Note that I am not stating that browj2 is entirely incorrect about "MAGIX Connect", I am merely showing that the "Connect" (only) listed App is indeed related to MAGIX software

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I remember having seen Connect on my laptop, but didn't find a signature on it (I didn't look hard enough). I just noticed that it is still on my desktop, or I had removed it and it came back. You are quite right, it is a Magix program. I tracked down connect.exe to the appropriately named folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MAGIX\Connect

It seems to have been installed late 2018.

I also have Magix Connect showing up on the App list but I couldn't track down the location of the executable, only the uninstall:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MAGIX Services\Uninstall\{subfolder code}

So the questions now are, what does Connect do that Magix Connect does not? If I remove Connect, will it affect Magix Connect, which I want to keep?

Thanks for pointing this out.

Hi

The Magix Connect installed 2018 ie

AFAICS the 2018 entry, in Apps, is a leftover in the system - looks like the 2019 installer/updater did not cleanup after itself.

Uninstalling the 2018 version removes the icon without affecting the 2019.

I also had to uninstall the "Connect" App, and there wasn't any way to tell what it was for, or that it was related to Magix, I wasted too much time digging through the task manager, start up apps, apps and features, and scheduled tasks looking for this!

It would be nice if during the installation, Magix would ask if we wanted pop-up ads. Obviously, no one would agree to install that...

Shady and Rude.
