Lenny - MAGIX products saves the info in temporary "project" files until you choose to export to an audio file format (wav, mp3, etc...).  This allows you to edit, add effects, and make any changes without altering the original audio.  Then, it permanently applies any edits or effects to the newly created audio export file.

Gentlemen,

When you record using ACL, an audio file is created. For the location, on the top menu click on Options, Path settings. See below.

When you click on the red record button, the record parameter screen opens. See the image below. The output format can be selected under the Capture format popdown. Here you can see the choices: Wave, MP3, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC. At the bottom of the screen under File path, ACL automatically adds a filename with the chosen format extension. You can change the filename here to suit.

When you reopen the project, ACL gets the proper files and displays the waveform on the screen. If you do any spectral cleaning, ACL will create another wave file (hopefully) because spectral cleaning is destructive and affects the external wave file. That is the only thing that can happen to the original recorded file. None of the other editing features affect this original file and it is not to be used as a final product; it is still the raw recording.

When you export, new files are created in the folder indicated on the export screen, and depending on the type of output selected, using a file name to match the project name, or using the track names if exported to individual files. Note that in the image below, the path (Last saved location) is not the same as the Folder path where the raw recordings are kept. This is done so as not to mix the final files in with the raw files.
