How do you create a new midi object with the piano roll editor?

MikeV wrote on 1/21/2014, 11:47 PM

I recently installed the Music Maker 2014 Soundtrack Edition.

Instructions say to click on a midi object to open the editor.

  • But how do you open the piano roll editor in order to create a new midi object from scratch?
  • And when you do that, what instruments are available?

While I had the trial version, at one point, the midi editor created piano notes but only after "recording" an empty midi track and then editing it.   After I bought and installed the Sountrack Edition, I cannot seem to get the piano back.

  • How do I get the piano instrument from the trial version of Soundtrack Edition back?

The only instrument choice seems to be the String Ensemble.  And I still cannot open a blank midi object to edit.

Thanks for any guidance here...

Go to the Synth tab at the bottom of the arranger screen.  Click (or double-click) on the Vita Midi Editor.  The "piano roll" will open, and it should load the default MIDI sequence and instrument, which is usually the default piano.  I can't imagine they would not have an acoustic piano instrument available.

To create a new MIDI sequence, got to....File > New

OR, go to File > Delete MIDI data....(or something to that effect)

When there is an existing MIDI object in the arranger, click (or double-click) on it to open Vita....OR, right-click on the MIDI object and click on "MIDI Editor"....(or something to that effect).  You can open the instrument Editor from the same right-click menu.

If you are missing instruments (you won't have as many with a special edition), it's possible the program did not load correctly, you did not update the program, and/or the trial version was not completely removed before loading the full program.

Procyon,  I appreciate the throroughness of your answer.  I have a proplem, however, finding what you're suggesting.

I could not find a "Synth tab".  My tabs are "Soundpools", "File Manager" "Instruments", "Templates", and "Keyboard".  Under "Instruments" I have two sections: "VST Instruments" with "String Ensemble" and "More...".  I also have an "Object Synthesizer" box with three objects: "BeatBox2", "Robata", and "Livid".

I cannot find "Vita Midi Editor" anywhere.  Here is my screen:

It appears I have all of the Soundpools that come with the Soundtrack Edition.  Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks

Hi

Instruments are the Synthesizers, the interface for this cut down version of MMM is different from other versions and has a limited range of instruments.

Try right clicking on an empty track and select Create a new object, Create new midi object ( the wording may not be exacty the same - I am referring to the full version of MMM.

Also there should be an installed pdf manual which should be accessible through the Help menu.

Thanks, John!  Your suggestion helped a lot.  And I did find it in the Help PDF once I knew exactly what to look for.
