How do I have a transparent background for an object?

I am trying to take something from a photo and have an object with a 'non-square' outline or a transparent background so that I can layer it over other things in other programs. Any ideas?

I use the Movie Edit Pro software from MAGIX... so I can take a photo of mine, and edit it with any photo editior... even Microsoft paint.

I use this to turn a section green (bright green... chroma-key green) then when I load it into Movie Edit Pro I load the background image or video and then overlay this edited image, use the effect for Chroma Key Green, and anything in the edited image that was that bright green is now transparent, and the background image or video shows.

There is is also the ability to size and position the image or video, even with a 3D movement so I can angle it to fit the background perfectly.
