How do I export 360° video so that it can be uploaded to Youtube?

lyndieh wrote on 12/28/2015, 8:30 AM

What are the proper settings to export a video file from Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus for Youtube upload?  I have tried many different combinations and uploading directly to Youtube but, as expected, the metadata is lost so it's not a 360° file once it's uploaded.  I then tried several different combinations and ran it through the Sperical Metadata Injector (as recommended by Youtube) but the video is distorted.  I have confirmed that the aspect ratio is correct & I even purchased the MPEG4 codec (although it's ridiculous that you have to purchase that separately).

The response that I received from Magix in regards to this question:

Unfortuantely you can only import 360° videos but you cannot export out a 360° video. It will export as 2D.

Please tell me this isn't correct since they have all the features to edit 360° videos and boust about this wonderful new feature in all of their advertising.  If you can't export your video as a 360° video then what's the point of editing it?  Is this false advertising or just a really poorly trained support person responding?

This is true.

They do claim 360° video support however if you read the specification it says:

'NEW! 360° editing.  Perfectly arranged from every angle: Movie Edit Pro 2016 Premium is the first editing program to support 360° footage'

Nowhere, AFAICS, do they claim MEP can export to 360° format, nor is it listed in the specification - see here for the supported formats - near bottom of page.

Johnebaker, you are correct.  It doesn't specifically state that it can export 360 file but I export from Adobe Premiere Plus as .mpeg4/.h264 video codec, which is supported by MEP.  When exporting from APP, all I have to do is run them through the 360 Video Metadata app (recommended by Youtube) and they upload perfect.

I guess I'm mainly just baffled as to why they would include all the editing features for 360 videos but not allow you to actually export those videos to use.

Info817, I would like to give you some help but this is a bait and switch on Magix's part.  As I was told via Facebook & email, Magix wanted to be cutting edge and give you the ability to edit 360 video before anyone else but they never implimented any means to export the edited video.  So, while it's not false advertising because you can edit the video just as they state, you simply waste your time in doing so because you can't share the video or even view the video in full 360 after it's edited.  I only purchased the software for this use so it's a complete waste of money.  Absolutely ridiculous!

you can do it but you have to then use the youtube metadata injector afterwards. I just did a test, albeit a very simple one. I imported a 360 video taken by my LG 360 camera. I just added a simple pixel blur effect and cropped the length and saved as an mp4. No other parameters were changed. I then ran the YT injector and it worked

Hi,

Can we see an example, please?

Thanks,

Its weird because YT says it is not a supported format when  I try to upload but it does work in my 360 video local player AND here on Daily Motion http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4fpeh6

in the short video you can drag around and see 3 added artifacts, a photo, a title and a small window which is playing another video. all rather rudimentary but it shows it can be done

@Kevin,

Thanks for the link, very interesting. Or course it doesn't work with IE, but does work in GC.

@Lyndieh,

Here is a link to a tutorial on how to prepare and export a 360 degree video and on how to add the metadata as indicated by Kevin.

In MEP 2016 Plus/Premium you can edit the video and export it to mp4, just like in Premiere Pro, but in both cases you have to use the Metadata Injector if you want to use the 360 effect in YouTube or another viewer that supports this. In nle programs that do not handle 360 videos, you cannot even load them into the program for editing as far as I know.

If you don't like this, then ask for a refund (you have 30 days from purchase) and buy, ahh, a program that edits and embeds the metadata, if one exists.

Hi,

Maybe a good idea to weigh in here. Magix is able to export 360° video's and with the metatool from youtube you can do it perfectly. The only thing you have to consider is that Youtube is setting your 360 Video to a much lower resolution by default. So you have to change it manually to 4K. Then it is fine.

There is 1 thing though and I hope somebody knows the answer to this. If I export a movie there is a black hole on the top and bottom (like the frame exported is not high enough by just millimeters.)

Besides that the program works fine for me
