How do I enable sound for monitoring in Windows 7 Pro?

I am getting signal on the mic in but I can't hear it while monitoring.   It shows on the peak meter in the Windows 7 but will not register in Music Maker however it will record and place the file on the grid just fine but I cannot hear what I'm playing as I record.   I am using Music Maker 2014 Premium with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.  Also my laptop is a HP Elitebook6930 and it has an built in external mic and only 1 line in but it only registers on the meter on the mic.  I enabled the line in and got no signal on the meter or in Music Maker.

ok, try this, on your desktop rightclick the volume icon, from there click on recording devices, this is where you want to start testing your mics, double click on external mic, from here make sure everything is working, you can check the meter here to see if the mic works, it also shows you which jack to plug in to. I would set the external mic level to 100 and see if you hear sound, normally I run it at nintey from this menu. And I dont have it set on listen to this device, but I use usb so let that be an option for later. Next click on advanced, use the 24bit 44100 hz (studio Quality), apply changes and save. if uncertain 24bit works for you, after saving you will still see the recording menu, in that box click on playback on top left, double click on speakers and headphones, click adavanced tab, select the same as earlier and click on test, if you hear sound apply and save. If no sound then try 16bit 44100, that should work. if thats the case, go back and change the recoding device to 16bit 44100hHz. with that done and mic working, open MMM, go to settings, click on audio tab, here is where you want to mess around with audio settings. you can try it primary, asio,or wave. try primary first, set both track and preview buffers to 16000 or higher. apply changes and restart the program. try recording, if it shows recording on track your good, if you cant hear your voice adjust volume or you can try to right click your vocals on the track, go to audio effects and select invert phase. Let me know how you do with this. If that dont work then I'll offer some more pointers if I can.
