how do I activate Dolby 5.1? Where are the sound preferences?

HPGoa wrote on 10/26/2011, 11:45 AM

I got a camcorder that records with Dolby 5.1.

I searched through the whole program and the helpfile but don't find the place where I can change the audio settings to Dolby 5.1

I do not even get any information that for activating Dolby 5.1 you need to download a paying codec.

Where is it???

Hi

IIRC first you must drag a clip with Dolby 5.1 sound on to the timeline this should activate a dialog asking you activate or buy - it depends which version of MEP you have - basic, Plus or Premium.

Hi John,

thank you for your rapid reply concerning Dolby 5.1in  MEP

I have Movie edit Pro 17 download version. I got a vague memory that when I used it first I got a message to activate or buy Dolby 5.1 and activated or bought it. But it is quite long ago and now I'm not sure. Anyway, when I drag a clip with Dolby 5.1 on the timeline, nothing happens. When I output it to say MP4, I obtain a file, where the properties say "stereo", not Dolby 5.1.

Also, while outputting, there is no dialogue box for changing the audio format, but when you check the properties, it says "stereo"

Is it stereo or is it Dolby?

I will only be able to check that  out next week as I don't have a home cinema system here.

I just noticed that  if you output  via shortcut H, several options offer stereo AAC. According to the Internet, this should be Dolby surround. My final idea is to make blue-Rays with Dolby 5.1

Anyway, Ill get back to you in a week or so to tell you whether this problem has been solved.

Regards

Hanspeter

Hi

Whilst the timeline shows a stereo track after import it will play as 5.1 if you open the mixer "M" and click the master 5.1 button and see the 6 channels displayed in track 2,3,4. You may need to go to the "Program Settings > Playback" tab and activate the Direct sound option which should activate the 5.1 speaker configuration in your sound card automatically.

You can display the 3 x 2 channel tracks in the timeline for further editing if you wish, by Rt. clicking the (stereo) audio track 2 and checking "Extract sound channels". In the mixer you can double click in the little graphic above the track sliders and move the sound field around the room.

For some strange reason the "File > Export to ....." options do not contain a preset for MP4 5.1 export. You need to go to the Burn section for Bluray or AVCHD where you will find presets and options for AC3 stereo or 5.1 export in the "advanced encoder settings". Just "Export to File" with "Image recorder" if you do not wish to burn a disk and your file will be in the BDMV subfolder of the disc structure.

There is a reasonably comprehensive section in the Help files about Surround sound possibilities and you can get some impressive results from a 5.1 camcorder. Added stereo music tracks can be distributed to rear speakers by dragging / shifting the sound field (red rings) towards the rear speaker icons in the mixer after clicking the graphic above the slider for that track. Pretty neat!

Have fun.

Hi

You can export in several formats with surround sound (Dolby 5.1?) as shown in these images for mp4 and mpg export.  You do need to select the correct audio codec.

Note these images are from MEP 17 Premium

Hi John

Sorry to mislead about the file export presets. for some strange reason I assummed we were talking about MPEG4 50p export (probably because I have been working with that recently) of which there is only one preset listed and that only gives the option of AAC stereo. As mentioned there are 5.1 presets in the Bluray and AVCHD disc burn area.

As to the activation prompt, I think this only occurs when you attempt to export in 5.1. Dragging a 5.1 clip to the timeline creates an automatic downmix to Dolby AC3 stereo and should ask for an activation of the 2.0 codec if this has not been previously activated in an earlier version of the program.  Also the program needs to be registered -according to the book.
