How can I reduce the size of my DV videos ?

Just installed MAGIX Rescue Videotapes software. I was able to copy contents from a DV mini tape to my Mac, however, a 40 min video was recorded as 34 GB on my hard disk. How can I reduce the size of the video? Ultimately I'd like to burn a DVD but at this rate it will be impossible !!

I am using OS X 10.8.5

Presumably this has been recorded in HD or uncompressed video format?

When you burn to DVD the resolution is reduced down to 720 * 576  (PAL) or 720*480 (NTSC) and the video is transcoded/compressed to mpg format ( VOB on disk ).

If it will not fit on a DVD then the software will offer you the option to adjust the bitrate of the video thus reducing its size. 

A standard DVD will hold ~ 2 hours video and the 'normal' bitrate compression ratio for the DVD standard.

The Mac version of "Rescue Your Videotapes" mentions using iDVD (which you may already have on your computer or as part of iLife) to burn your captured video to DVD. You could also install the Mac version of the free DVD authoring program "DVD Styler". Your captured video will be compressed into an mpeg2 file to fit on the disc.
